    4 M p ' concur* Mr. M i l l e r proposes that we develop such a w e ll a short d istan ce below the upper sp rin g s and b u ild a concrete standpipe into which t h is w e ll would flo w , b rin g in g the w ater le v e l up to that o f the upper sp rin g, and connecting the o u tle t o f the standpipe w ith our g r a v it y l i n e . There i s a l i t t l e more than 1000 fe e t o f v i t r i f i e d p ip e between t h is p o in t and the end o f the 16w wood-stave pipe which should be renewed w ith a wood-stave o r re in fo rc e d concrete. Suqh a plan w i l l in crease the head and g iv e b e t t e r pressure to the C ity o f Las Vegas. and th is system would fu rn ish about the same amount o f w ater that we are now g e t t in g . In th is way, the w ater supply would be a b s o lu te ly protected from contamination by an expenditure o f from #10,000 to #10,000, and/the flo w from the low er sp rin g s could be d iv e rte d to the company’ s farm, which would g iv e th is p ro p erty a re n ta l valu e that I b e lie v e would pay I... __ good retu rn s upon the investment*') RB£, f would th e re fo re recommend that some actio n be taken a t the e a r lie s t p o s s ib le date along th is l i n e . There have been a t l e a s t wo epidemics in L as Vegas which p h ysician s were in c lin e d to su bscribe to contamination o f the w ater supply. One o f these I f e e l qu ite sure could be a ttrib u te d to th is source. As to the other, 1 am v e ry muc^ in doubt, as I do not think th at i t was in any way a w ater-born d ise a se . However, we are b e in g c r it ic is e d by the lo c a l h ea lth a u th o rit ie s , and are l i k e l y to be c a lle d to account b y the State Board o f h e a lt h . I th e re fo re b e lie v e that t h is action should not be delayed. CC; Mr. W.H.Comstock. r-r a
