M* Jeffersf This has reference to your letter July 38* 1943* File 199, authorizing employment of a water oheoker at a rate not to exeeed #350 per monthi The position was established at a rate of #175 per month, and we assigned George Manning, a young married man with three dependents. He has been doing a very good job, but it Is rather difficult in view of the wages paid by the Railroad to new brakemen and firemen, and he has discussed with me the possibility of making his student trips. However I feel hie ssrvloea oould be better utilized in his present oap&oity as it would be quite impossible to secure as competent a man at the present rate. X would like to Increase the rate to $300 per month, effective April 1st, In order to keep our present organ!sation intact X feel an adjustment should be made also in the rate of the Clerk-Stenographers in this office# While their positions are classed as Steno-Clerks, Miss Fitzgerald (who has been with us since July 1938) and Xla Bryan both take oare of a large portion of the accounting, cash oolleotions under bond and public contacts. Two prior incumbents are new employed by the Railroad Company here at a monthly salary of $180, that la in the Asst. Superintendent*s office and in the Yard office. The Headmaster's secretary also received $180 and the Signal Supervisor*a secretary $190. To keep these positions on a comparable basis and avoid breaking in new employes at this time when our revenues and number oat oonsumera have both sharply increased, I request permission to increase Helen Fitzgerald*s rate from $160 to $180 per month, and Xla Bryan*a rate from $160 to $170 per month, both effective April 1st.
