Beth Sholom Bulletin The Temple Monthly Bulletin Early Childhood Character Brunch October 22 The Sandra and Stanley Mallin Early Childhood Center Parent Teacher Organization is excited to announce its new fun-filled program; A Character Brunch, to be held on Sunday October 22. This program is especially designed for families with young children. Everyone will enjoy a delicious breakfast and be entertained by famous and silly characters like "Sponge Bob", "Dora" and more. This fabulous event will be held in Temple Beth Sholom's large social hall. In addition to meeting a variety of 'Characters', children will be entertained with a bounce house and face painting. A balloon artist will also be on hand to create all of the incredible creatures our children will imagine. Families will have the opportunity to support the preschool and bid on children's original art work created by this year's preschool students. In addition, families will have an opportunity to participate in a raffle to win gift baskets that have been donated by each preschool class. If you have young children or grandchildren, you won't want to miss this fantastic, fun-filled event. For more information about this wonderful event, or to be added to the invitation list, please contact the preschool office at 804-1333 extension 112. October 2006 Tishrei-Heshvan 5767 The High Holy Days Continue Sukkot Services Friday, October 6, 7:30 PM Saturday, October 7, 9:00 AM Sunday, October 8, 9:00 AM Monday, October 9, 7:30 AM Tuesday, October 10, 7:30 AM Wednesday, October 11,7:30 AM Thursday, October 12, 7:30 AM Hoshanah Rabbah Friday, October 13, 7:30 AM Shemini Atzeret Friday, October 13, 7:30 PM Saturday, October 14, 9:00 AM Simchat Torah Saturday, October 14, 7:00 PM Sunday, October 15, 9:00 AM Rabbi Felipe Goodman Simchat Torah, My Favorite Time Of The Year Rabbi Felipe Goodman I do not remember the details the details, but this celebration of Simchat Torah took place in a concentration camp during the Shoah. Inmates in one barrack began to celebrate the holiday, though they did not have a Torah scroll with which to dance. Yet they wanted to dance with a Torah scroll. One of the inmates asked the only teenage boy that lived with the older men how much he knew of Torah. The boy answered that he already was preparing himself for his Bar Mitzvah before being deported to the camp. "There's enough Torah in you" said the man. You will be our Torah scroll" and he lifted up the boy and held him tenderly over his shoulders as though he was a precious Torah scroll. Elie Wiesel reported from Russia in the mid-60's how Jews who were otherwise reluctant to identify themselves as Jews on any other day of the year, would mark the eve of Simchat Torah by assembling right outside the central Moscow synagogue as though to say, "I have remembered." By contrast, we Americans do not have a special day on which we assemble in a public library to read from the works of Mark Twain. Nor do the British mark Shakespeare's literature on any given day of the year. Nor do the Russians mark a Tolstoy day, nor for that matter do the Germans dedicate a special day to celebrate Goethe. But Jews dedicate a special day to celebrate, rejoice, and dance with the Torah marking the annual conclusion and the concurrent resumption of the Torah reading cycle. I began this message with a somber story. Let me finish with a joyous one. October 2006 Tishrei-Heshvan 5767 Once on Simchat Torah, Rabbi Naftali of Rufshitz eyed one particular wagon driver joyously singing, leaping and skipping with the Torah f scroll during the seven Hakafot (processions). "My son," said the Rabbi, "why are you rejoicing so much? Have you studied Torah so much last year to warrant this level of joyfulness that you are exhibiting?" "Rabbi," said the wagon driver, "should not I be merry when my brethren who study Torah all year long are celebrating? Is not their rejoicing also mine? Rabbi Naftali blushed and mumbled, "^ou have defeated me, my friend, you have defeated me!" Do we need any additional reasons to come and join our community as we celebrate the festivalofSimchatTorah? Would not you be a part of it? Join us on Saturday night October 14 at 7:00 PM. We will have live music by The Ruach ensemble. Let's make sure we gather to sing and dance together. Am Israel Chai! President Executive Director High Holy Days Ed Seltzer It's hard to believe the summer is almost over & the High Holy Days are upon us. The temple has been very busy planning & preparing for the registration of our family of congregants. We are welcoming many new members to Temple Beth Sholom and are experiencing a substantial increase in the enrollment of new children to our schools. How fortuitous it was when our lay leaders made the decision in the early 90's to relocate to the Summerlin area. We now find ourselves centrally located in the premier area of the valley as well as one of the fastest growing communities. You undoubtedly saw the Review Journal article about Summerlin's future plans. There are presently 93,000 residents living in 34,000 residences and they have just reached the half way point in the build out of the Summerlin community. Our future growth is definitely not in question. The timing of our expansion plan is certainly timely, by the conclusion of the High Holy Days we will be proceeding into final plans, so please keep thinking about your dedication opportunities. We'll have detailed information for you after Yom Kippur. As you know, a temple is the basic building block of our religion. Each of us contributes to enrich the whole. We are fortunate to have accomplished so much, we are a tribute to the entire Jewish community I ask you to commit now?to yourself. Do one more thing this year with Temple Beth Sholom than you have in the past. Treat yourself to something that we have to offer here. Join us and participate. Your only question will be - why did I wait so long? On behalf of my entire family, your clergy, board of directors & staff we wish you a happy, healthy, sweet and safe year. Lshana Tova Tikatevu. Change and Opportunity at TBS Laura Sussman There have been some exciting changes recently and there are some exciting opportunities for you at Temple Beth Sholom. During the summer, the temple's Board of Directors participated in a series of three special meetings to review their leadership and direction. As a result we have developed, what I believe is a more efficient and effective leadership structure. One of our areas of emphasis during the coming year will focus on developing leadership at the committee level. A board member will serve as a chairman or active participant on each committee. In addition, we are looking for congregants to participate on our Beth Sholom Bulletin various committees. This is a great opportunity for each congregant to help make a difference in the future of our synagogue. A newly functioning committee is the Programming Committee, which will work on developing social and recreational programs for adults, among other things. Please give me a call if you are interested in serving on this or one of our other committees. One ofthe other major accomplishments of the Board over the past few months was a revision of our Temple Bylaws. If you are interested in seeing a copy, please let me know. I was glad to see so many of our congregants during the High Holy Days services. Even though we see most of our congregants during the High Holy Days, we are here year-round with many interesting, stimulating and fun programs. I encourage you to take full advantage of everything the temple has to offer; participate in our expanded Adult Education program, bring a child or grandchild to a toddler activity, participate in Men's Club and Women's League, volunteer for a committee or LDor V'Dor, come to a special program like the upcoming Candidates Night or the Character Brunch, and, of course, join us at Shabbat and Holyday services. LShana Tova Tikatevu! Education Yonina Schnee Beth Sholom Bulletin Jon Mitzmacher Shopping Center has been added. For a tour of the school and for information, please call 804-1333 x114. Religious School k k a h : c o r a t e d by the s t u d e n t s of the Religious School. You don't want to miss it! Solomon Schechter The Solomon Schechter Day School of Las Vegas proudly opened its doors on Monday, August 2 8th to welcome nearly fifty students to its third year. With two kindergarten classes, along with first, second, and third grades, the SSDS-LV begins a truly historic year in its development. Schechter has not just grown in numbers, but also in programming adding a Breakfast Club, After School Programming, Extended After-Care, a Girl Scouts Troop, a Parent-Teacher Organization and much, much more. This year ground will be broken on a new school building, s t a n d a r d i z e d testing will be introduced, and the process for a c c r e d i t a t i o n will begin. Even though school has already begun, a p p l i c a t i o n s are still coming in. It is still not too late to enroll for 2006-2007. There are limited spaces available. The school encourages you to discover why it is currently the fastest growing school in Las Vegas. The school is housed at Temple Beth Sholom in Summerlin. For those families living in Southeast Las Vegas and I lenderson, bus service is provided from Midbar Kodesh Temple in Green Valley. A second stop at 820 E. Warm Springs & 215 in the Applebee's 4 We had our Faculty Orientation on August 27th and afterwards we were visited by Religious School parents and students for a "meet & greet". The big day for returning to Religious School was on September 10th, and with the help of many hardworking volunteers and an energetic faculty, it was as smooth an opening as we have ever had! The change to a new, integrated curriculum has been a great change for the students, and the 3rd-7th graders really love the variety that they have in their weekday afternoons. Music, Tefillah, Hebrew, Jewish History, Holidays, and Values & Ethics are stimulating their minds, and of course they love to see their friends, as well! Please note that there will be no school on Sunday, October 1st, Monday, October 2nd, Sunday, October 8th, and Sunday, October 15thdue to Kol Nidre, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Simchat Torah. To celebrate Sukkot, we will be holding the second annual Pizzain the Hut! on Wednesday, October 11, 5:30-6:30 PM. Come and join us as we celebrate Sukkot in our beautiful Midrasha The first session of Midrasha was a "Back to School Night" on September 14th. Parents and students came to discuss new subjects and other possible programs for our High School students, and we will soon be sending out bulletins announcing the finalized schedule of classes. Let us know if you still want to join in! Adult Education We had a great turnout for the beginning of adult education classes! If you have not registered for classes yet, you can still catch up! If you've always wished you'd learned to read Hebrew, or paid more attention to the prayers and their meanings, have we got a class for you!! We even have a 4-session mini course with Rabbi Goodman called Kosher Kabbalah! Brochures are available either in the Religious School Office or in the Front Office. There are also some one-hour workshops coming up to help us all get ready for the holiday of Sukkot, Please call Lillian Radomsky at extension 114 if you would like a brochure mailed to you, if you would like to join the Adult Education Commission, of if you have any questions about Adult Education at TBS. USY This USY year has been off to a great start so far! We began with our annual opening pool party at the Tredup's home. There was a great turnout of old and new members. It was wonderful to see so many new faces! The new executive board was announced. We played a game of human bingo, which turned out to be quite fun. Everyone was given a bingo card, each square had a different trait such as "Someone born in the same state". It turned into a lot of fun when you heard people yelling " W H O WAS BORN IN N E W YORK?!", and various other states. Everyone enjoyed swimming in the pool and eating tons of food.. .Lots of fun was had by all. Over Labor Day weekend, I had the pleasure of representing TBS USY at the regional Disneyland day. We left Las Vegas around 4 in the morning, and returned around the same time the next day. But it was worth it! I got to spend the day having fun in Disneyland, surrounded by over 300 other USYers. Not only did I get to see my regional friends who I haven't seen since Convention in May, I got to meet many, many other amazing USYers from different places. On behalf of the entire board, I welcome you to an AMAZING USY year. We look forward to seeing you at our next event!! Math - Hooray! Social Skills Hooray! All of the children here at the Sandra and Stanley Mallin Early Childhood Center can't stop cheering after a remarkable first day at school. For some this is a first-time school experience, but even our veteran pre-kindergarteners' eyes are alight with the joy and excitement that the beginning of a new school year brings. After a brief "getting to know you" session, the children jumped feet first into a year of learning and fun. From our 18 month old Frogs all the way through to our 4 year old Bears' classes, the children experienced chances to problem-solve, classify and sort objects, engage in creative planning, strengthen their fine motor skills, and participate in creating a class book - all in their first day! Just imagine what other stimulating and wonderful learning opportunities the teachers have planned to expose the children to throughout the remainder of the year. For Rosh Hashanah, ourchildren participated in various activities such as counting, stamping, tasting, baking, examining apples, and much more. The children anxiously await the Rabbi visiting their class to blow the shofar. Cantor Daniel has also been teaching the children Jewish holiday songs! I wish you and your families Shanah Tova, a Sweet New Year! Welcome all of our preschool families to join us for our traditional family Shabbat lunch each Friday @ 11:15am. Kindly leave your reservation at the preschool desk each week by Wednesday. Get ready, you will enjoy celebrating with Cantor Daniel, singing songs and sipping our homemade matzah ball soup! Temple News Beth Sholom Bulletin Women's League News Kim Memar I just love this time of year. Sukkot is one of my favorite holidays. I think it is because it is one that truly brings my family together as a "family". We have grown spiritually through our High Holy Days traditions and special services and are ready to sit back, relax, and reflect in our sukkah which we have built together as a family. I hope you can also take some time to make your own sukkah; but if not, you can still observe the mitzvah by joining us for our Women's League general meeting and program in the Sukkah at TBS. This will be on TUESDAY NIGHT, October 10, from 5:30-7. Please join us for this enjoyable evening when we will celebrate the holiday with festive talk and food inspired by the words of our guest speaker Rabbi Goodman. Please Hurry and RSVP for this extraordinary event to Kim Memar at 429-0888 seating is limited! In closing, I hope to see everyone during the month of October; either at one of our events or at one or more of our special services held during the festivals of Sukkot through Simhat Torah.
