I t is c e rta in that the continuous stave is the longer liv e d pipe as i t would be banded with 7'/l6 inch s t e e l and the bands could be replaced in ease o f corrosion o f any p a rtic u la r one at very l i t t l e expense, the old bands simply being removed and a new one put in i t s p la c e . The machine banded pipe to be rep aired would have to have a new section wherever the wire gave out on any p a rtic u la r s e c tio n . The l i f e o f machine banded pipe i s the l i f e o f the ga lva n izin g on the w ire which, under average conditions in the west where the s a lt fogs are absent, would he about 25 years. The l i f e o f a continuous stave pipe weado not know fo r the o r ig in a l in s ta lla tio n s of a ir d ried redwood pipe, o f our manufacture, a re s t i l l in existen ce and some o f them are 28 years o ld but I t is f a i r to estim ate that i t is somewhere from 50 to 60 yea rs.
