as the latter. Its sides are almost perpendicular, and of solid rock. Long Valley contracts at its lower end into this gorge through which Owens River finds its way to Big Round Valley and -the valleys surrounding Independence, Inyo County, and finally, what water is not used in said valleys for irrigation, is discharged into Owens Lake, in the same Oounty. The dam site at the neck of this canon and the lower end of Long Valley, is almost an Ideal one, and at the "bottom, not more than 80 to 100 feet in width, and on the top not over 300 feet in width, while the height of the same is about 2000 or 3000 feet. At this point, Long Valley can be closed up comparatively without large expense or difficulty, to a height of 200 feet, by a rock-fill or hydraulic and rock masonry dam combined, since the material for either of these types of dam is at hand at the dam site. At the height of the dam of about 200 feet, the area of Long Valley covered with water would exceed 30,000 acres. POWER HOUSE SITE.- The power house site t located in Big Round Valley, is a very favorable place, since the power house would have to be constructed at the head of a valley of at least 10 miles long and 8 miles wide, which is now occupied by farms and used for agricultural purpose^, and through which Rock Greek and Owens River flow after they have united, and the water could be returned through the channel of Rock Creek into Owens River. 4 .
