Las Vegas - June 25th, 1935* W 23-3-5 Mr. W. M. Jeffers, President, las Vegas land and Aater Co*, Omaha, lebraska. B e a r S i r ; Referring t o your telegram B-92 of June 21st concerning proposed municipal ownership of public utilities in las Vegas: The smtier of manicipal ownership is of great importance not only to us, but also the local power distributing company, which secures its electrical energy from the Railroad power plant in the shop yards. Mr* M . f* Clark, president of the First State Bank here, is also president of the power company* He is also Rational Committeeman representing the Democratic party in levada and carries a great deal of influence our senators and congressman in Washington, especially Senator Pittman. Recently, Mr. Clark wrote Senator Pittman, asking far direct information concerning an application by the City of Las Vggsg for a FIA loan for the intended purchase of power and water facilities in small cities, and Senator Pittman forwarded Mr* Clark's inquiry to Mr* Iekes. Federal Emergency Administrator of Public ioarka* I a® enclosing copy of Mr* Iekes* reply, for your information. As I understand from Mr* lakes' letter, the KfA will not grant such loans for the sole purpose of pensitting municipalities to acquire existing facilities. The real purpose of the IWA is to provide useful projects and principally to provide employs®nt during their construction. fhe reason I am writing you on this subject is to make it clear that the present facilities we have in Las Vegas are ample to provide for the needs of this city, or in feet for a city with twice our present population.
