Reno Gazzette July 25, 1942 ^ . ..J , fi ? ? gg « I Water Consumption in Reno and Sparks Rises to Huge Qallonage This Summer le Water consumption in. Reno and Sparks is at midsummer figures, and there is a possibility that the all-tirnd record set last year may be reached or surpassed, officials of the Sierra Pacific Power company said today. The . current hot spell has been reflected on the amount of water used in the two communities. On Sunday, the gauges at the city reservoirs and well showed' 19,400,000 gallons discharged. The following day, the amount jumped to 22,400,000 gallons, with approximately' the same amount on Wednesday. Yesterday the gallon- age was increased to 22,640,500 gallons. The greatest amount of water used in Reno and Sparks on one day, was on July 22 of last year, when 24,000,000 gallons poured through the water system. At the present time, t|iet Highland reservoir located at thd northwest edge of the city is supplying most of the Water. The Hunter creek resej-vtir to the southwest provides between 6,000,000 | and 8.000. 000 gallons , daily, , while 1.- 500.000. gallons are pumped each day from the deep well between Reno- and Sparks, Although the hot, dry weather brings an increased need of water, officials of the power company declared that a large amount of water is wasted daily. Garden hoses that run for several hours* or in some cases all day long, are blamed for the largest single loss of water. Leaky plumbing fixtures .also contribute to the loss of water, while improperly- adjusted air conditioning systems use more water--than is require^ Power company officials also stressed that a large amoUnt nf chlorine is required to purify the water supply, and they said that this chemical is one of the critical War materials. Careful use of water would result in using less -chlorine, with, the result that more of this praterial would be. avail- ; able to War industries.
