Bet Knesset Bamidbar Volume IX issue 3 NEWSLETTER Adar I -Adar II 5760 HAPPY PURIM FROM RABBI9S DESK HERSHEL BROOKS Purim which is observed universally by Jews in all lands, is but one of many Purims celebrated throughout the world in specific localities. Scores of these Purims are listed, all commemorating special events that bore a striking similarity to the Purim of Persia, with its Haman, Mordecai and Esther, and its last minute miracle. Many are preceded by a day of fasting, and the Purim itself accompanied by exchange of gifts, feasting, and the reading of a scroll relating to the incidents leading up to the celebration. These Purims were not necessarily observed during the month of Adar. Below are a few examples of many in history. PURIM OF CASTILE - 1339 Gonzalo Martinez, commander of the Castilian army, sought to expel the Jews from Castile and take all their possessions that would be used to finance the king's war against the Mohammedans. Moses Abudiel discovered his plotting. He won the ear of beautiful Leonora de Guzman, who was the favorite of King Alfonso XI of Castile. She revealed to the king that Gonzalo was preaching treason, and, in fact, wanted to become king himself. Gonzalo's armies surrendered to Alfonso XI and the general was burned at the stake. Moses Abudiel, together with Leonora de Guzman, induced the king to abolish many decrees that were unfriendly to the Jews of Castile. The Purim of Castile is celebrated in the month of Adar. PURIM OF SARAGOSSA ? 1428 The King of Aragon, whenever he visited the Street of the Jews in Saragossa, used to be met by leaders of the community who carried scrolls of the Torah in arks of wood. Many Jews questioned if the carrying of the Torah back and forth for such a purpose was not sacrilegious, and it was decided that henceforth only the empty wooden arks would be carried in greeting the king. A convert from Judaism informed the king that the Jews were planning not to show him the proper respect and he made an unscheduled visit to the Street The night before, however, the synagogue leaders were warned in a dream of the king's visit and its purpose. The king ordered the wooden arks to be opened, and when he found the decorated scrolls within, the informer was punished. The Sephardim in Jerusalem, until quite recently, observed the Purim of Saragossa on Shevat 17 each year, with feasting, and reading from the Saragossa Scroll. PURIM FETTMILCH - 20 ADAR, 1616. Vincent Fettmilch, a baker, roused a mob against the Jewish populace of Frankfurt, plundering, ravishing and terrorizing them. The town council advised the Jews to leave Frankfurt to protect them. For more than a year the Jews lived in nearby towns, sustained by the charity of their fellow Jews, until order was restored and the leaders of the mob, including Fettmilch, were beheaded. The Jews returned "under the protection of the Emperor" and the Christian populace was ordered to pay the Jews for the losses they had suffered. Adar 20 is celebrated as'Purim Fettmilch. PURIM OF TRIPOLI - PURIM BURGEL - NEW MOON OF SHEVAT, 1793. Ali Karamenli, the aging and licentious pasha of Tripoli, was especially unfriendly to the Jews and his attitude and decrees were becoming progressively worse. The wife of the head of the Jewish community, noted for her charm and wisdom, and her ability to amuse the old ruler with her tales, won his friendship and became his confidante and adviser on state affairs. Through the intercession of this 'Queen Esther of Tripoli', the pasha became less hostile to her fellow Jews and her influence continued to grow. But civil war broke out in Tripoli, and the pasha's son, Ali Burgel, took over the reigns of government and vented his wrath against the Jews, 'Queen Esther,' and all of Tripoli. The Jewish community was ordered to pay a huge ransom or face death. In the midst of their extreme adversity, Burgel Pasha went off to war and was badly defeated. Ali Pasha was returned to office, and the Jews were saved. Each year in Tripoli and Bengazi they read a scroll relating the story of the downfall of Burgel and observe the 29th of Tevet as a Purim Festival. 2 PRESIDENT SHEL KOLNER Shalom!!! I thought I would reflect on a few of the recent happenings I have experienced as President. It is now about 2 full months of activity and I have had a few things happen I would like to share with all of you. January 29, 2000 was the first time I know of that Bet Knesset Bamidbar had a Saturday morning Shabbat Service. It was a wonderful thing to behold. It showed a certain maturity the Temple had not demonstrated before. Most of us come to Friday Evening worship and come for the service that interrupts the social hours. But on Shabbat Morning we were there to celebrate the Service and to honor our 24 women who became Bat Mitzvah. It was indeed a wonderful experience. We had 442 chairs set as we do for every Shabbat evening Service and we had to have the facility people bring out more. There were about 500 in attendance. What a wonderful time!! Rabbi Brooks and the women ran a beautiful Shabbat Morning Service. There were numerous comments on how wonderful it was. Look to be at the next Shabbat Morning Service scheduled to have 24 more Bar and Bat Mitzvah participants. Right after that Service I had one of the men who was there to honor his family ask me if I thought the Temple would be willing to support some of the work being done in the area to help the local Jewry. He is active in bringing a Jewish Community Center and elderly facility to our area. I indicated to him that I would bring this to our Board as part of our Outreach program. I will be looking for congregants to get involved in this area. We have wonderful resources in our Temple and I would like to direct them in this direction - whether it is the Jewish community Center or some other way - but it is time to reach out to help others. One other thing happened in the past few days that prompted me to think along these lines. The Men's Club, as they do every first Sunday of the month, had a guest speaker at the meeting. He was Kendall Tenney of the local NBC affiliate. He was very interesting but the more important and interesting part of the meeting was the activities presented by the Men's Club and the information that was presented by the members who were there. One of our members indicaiea he was involved in a Jewish History meeting another on a review of a book that had to do with Jews and World War II. Others brought up items that were on their personal agendas which I won't go into, but I found this meeting very, very enlightening and interesting. It sure proves one thing ? if you are bored in Sun City, you need to get out and get into life. There is always something to do ? especially something to grow with. It can be within the Bet Knesset Bamidbar family of activities or outside. Just do it... just get involved. MEN'S CLUB NEWS LOU POKAT , President Our next meeting will be at MountainView Hospital on Sunday, March 5, 2000. The speaker will be Ms. Renee Rivera of the Gaming Enforcement Bureau of Nevada. This is the only speaker we have ever asked back to speak. She spoke to us about a year and a half ago and was very interesting. I have had many requests from the members of the Men's Club to have her back. Her subject was Cheating by the Casinos, Dealers and Players. Dont miss this onel We have just finalized our tour of Nellis Air Force Base. The date is March 29. There is no charge for the tour. You will see all the planes, possibly the Thunderbirds, watch the training of the guard dogs, etc. The .tour , takes approximately 2 hours. Afterwards there will be lunch at the Officer's Club at a small charge. You must call Marvin Oberstein at 341-6481 and make a reservation. If he is not at home, leave your name and telephone number on his answering machine. Women are invited. Due to a shortage of buses, the first 45 people will be accepted. If we have more interest, we will do this again at a later date. If you are still interested in baseball tickets for Saturday, April 1st, please call Ray Izen at 233-4473. Remember...our breakfast starts promptly at 9:00 a.m., the meeting at 9:30 a.m. and the speaker at 10:00 a.m. See you on March 5th at 9:00 a.m. at MountainView Hospital on Tenaya. ABOUT RITUAL LOUIS KUONSKY, VP Ritual MAN IS A TREE Torah is a tree of life for all who grasp it You may remember from Hebrew school ... once a year you'd get a little bag with some raisins, dates, and carob (the hard, brown "fruit" sometimes known as bokser). and you'd collect money to plant trees in Israel. That was Tu B'Shevat. Of course, there's a deeper meaning behind the holiday, beyond what actor Kirk Douglas calls "the 13 year old's view of Judaism". The source for Tu B'Shevat is the opening statement of the Talmudic Tractate Rosh Hashana: "The Academy of Hillel taught about the New Year for the trees." What does that mean, "New Year for the Trees"? Do all the cedars and pines get together, make resolutions to improve themselves, and dip apples in honey? Of course not Tu B'Shevat is the day of the year when trees stop absorbing water from the ground, and instead draw nourishment from their sap. In Jewish law, this means that fruit which has blossomed prior to the 15m of Shevat could not be used as tithe for fruit which blossomed after that date. So what relevance does this have in the 21st century? In various places, the Torah compares a person to a tree: "A person is like the tree of a field" (Deut.) "For as the days of a tree shall be the days of my people." (Isaiah) "He will be like a tree planted near water." (Jeremiah) Why the comparison? A tree needs the four basic elements in order to survive - soil, water, air, and fire (sun). A person is like the tree of a field. Human beings also require the same basic elements. Purim never occurs on Monday, Wednesday or Saturday. Lag B'Omer, the 33"1 day of the counting of the Omer, always occurs on the day of the week on which Purim falls. The Megillah, the Scroll of Esther, is the only book of the Bible in which the name of G-d is not mentioned, that was written to commemorate an incident that took place outside the land of Israel, and written entirely outside the land. It is the only one of the 24 books of the Bible, the Prophets and Scriptures that must be written in accordance with the laws that govern the writing of the Torah scroll. The Megillah of Esther is written on sheepskin parchment or deer parchment only. About our Newsletter: Bet Knesset Bamidbar of Sun City Newsletter is a monthly publication BKB address is P.O. Sandra Ziskrout. a marriage and family therapist will speak to us about "Passionate Longevity". This should be interesting - whether she educates and entertains us or we add to her store of Knowledge. I should imagine most of you have sponsored and Oneg Shabat at some time. Our next Board meeting will be held on March 6 at 9L00 a.m. at the Nevada State Bank. SINGLES' NEWS FAYE ARSHAWSKY, President We are off to a wonderful start! Plans are being finalized for a very fun filled year. Hope to see all you singles II! Again, I wish to thank a very special person, Rhoda Schwartz. Without her foresight and determination, "A Group of Jewish Singles" would not exist. About 4 years ago she started the group and has been president ever since. We would like to thank her for her special leadership in this organization. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the outgoing Board Members, most of whom also served 4 years. We are a great group of people, with a common denominator, looking for friendship, things to do, places to go, trying to fill a void in our lives. Come join us for some lunch, talk and friendship. Our next meeting is on Sunday, March 12,1:30 p.m. at the Sahara Library. See you therein Bet Knesset Bamidbar appreciates your donations in memory of your loved ones. Any donation that comes in before the 8th of the month is acknowledged in that month's newsletter. All others are printed in the next month's newsletter.
