/ Zjos Angeles - September 19, 1952 Hr. A, X. Stoddards <00 - Mr. V. H. Holsissr - Omaha) Referring to jour latter of Septenber 10 th, file 199, la which you request ay views regarding what should he done la connection with the developments having to do tilth the separation of Operating Deportment1* water supply from the LTX&SCo. opofutlone at las Tegaet shop veil should he done immediately and ve have recommended thle proce-dure repeatedly. ease 1 have, suggested that from a viewpoint of our relatione with the Water District in the future it would aeon preferable that FFS water he purchased from the District. However, apparantly Mr. lynch and others do not agree with me on this subject end, for that reason, 1 hove no objection if they elect to supply the water, i would say, however, that 1 can eee no good reaeon why the railroad should supply water to FIX at a rate lover than the going rote as eat up by the Veter District, as otherwise tii© railroad would be making a substantial contribution to Southern Pacific. reason, in ay opinion, la not entirely a reliable source of water ae the pipe is probably pretty well corroded and It might collapse at any time. Of course, the question as to how much insurance on this supply is necessary is a aatter for the decision of the Operating Department. Hy view would be that a new well should be drilled end equipped in order that should anything happen to the old well there would be no break in the ability to take ears of the necessary operating requirements. Ve can undoubtedly make an arrangement with the District under which we would have a connection to their lines, through which connection, we could receive water, if needed, end when available. It should be remembered, however, that should cur need of water oolnclds with a shortage in the amount available in the 221 strict lines, the Vater District would certainly' take cars of tha domestic requirements before supplying water to the railroad. X have gone over the proposed installation of storage tank, and construction of additional water lines with hr* Haag, and 2 think that tha proposed layout from an engineer** viewpoint it wall worked out. X alee thick that It i* highly advisable that additional storage be provided for. Tha amount and character of this storage la a matter which the Operating Department are much better equipped to work out then X would be because of their Intimate familiarity with their own requirements. X quite agree that the transfer of water appropriation to the She aatter of supplying water to FIX* In previous oorrespoad- She present shop veil is about thirty years old end for that J M b.
