Perer President Jewish Federation of Las Vegas 1030 E. Twain Avenue Las Vegas, NV 89109 Dear Dr. Perer: It is with a great deal of pleasure that I submit to you the request of the Association of Jewish Family and Children's Agencies for a 1991 allocation of $250. For your information, I am enclosing a copy of the most recent issue of the monthly "Resettlement Bulletin" published by the Association of Jewish Family and Children's Agencies. This is the only publication in the organized Jewish Community to deal with the practical issues of resettlement. It has become widely accepted in the field and is read by the staff of the Council of Jewish Federations, Federation resettlement and planning staff all over the country, and, of course, by the staff and volunteers of our 140 Jewish Family and Children's Services throughout North America. As successful as it is, the "Bulletin" is only one facet of the national leadership position the Association has taken in the resettlement of Russian Jews. We are proud of all we have accomplished to date. Sam L. Ackerman, San Diego Sylvan R. Alter, San Antonio Felicia F. Anchor, Nashville Bernard Aserkoff, M.D., Boston Sandra B. Kendall Park, NJ 08824-0248- 2 - In addition to the "Bulletin": * We have convened several meetings of the heavily impacted resettlement communities so that Executives of these agencies can work cooperatively and learn from each other. * We have presented sessions at our Annual Conferences educating volunteer leaders and professionals about ways in which resettlement can be done more effectively and efficiently. * We have advocated strongly on behalf of Jewish acculturation, which we believe will be the major challenge to face the Jewish community in the future. * We have issued position papers on resettlement as a total community effort and on the place of confidentiality in the resettlement process. * We have created a separate section of our resource files for resettlement material. Our listing of materials in that section is updated monthly. These materials are made available to all facets of the Jewish community, at no charge, regardless of their affiliation with the Association. To date, we are responding to an average of 68 requests a month for resettlement information alone. * We represent the Jewish Family Service movement on three CJF committees and Task Forces concerned with resettlement including their newly created Task Force on Acculturation and Integration. * We co-sponsored several national meetings, conferences, and workshops on aspects of resettlement, including the NYANA Conference held in September of 1989, the Consultation on Jewish Acculturation convened by AJFCA along with CJF and several other national agencies, and a full day of resettlement forums, workshops, and institutes at the 1989 General Assembly of the Council of Jewish Federations. All of these resettlement activities have taken place in addition to fulfilling our regular functions. This year we provided an Annual Conference for over 340 professional and volunteer leaders, trained 12 new Jewish Family Service Executives, gathered and disseminated information and statistics on the Jewish Family and the Jewish Family Service, and provided local consultation to our member agencies as well as to emerging Jewish communities.3 We also continue to provide personnel services, including assisting in Executive Searches, and the Association remains the only national Jewish agency with "800" number service to encourage usage and ease access to our resources. In addition, we still operate the Shroder Award-Winning Elder Support Networksm on behalf of the Continental Jewish Community. Of course, all this activity takes place within the context of the fact that we are the smallest national agency serving a major functional branch of the Jewish community, with less than three full-time professional and 2.5 clerical staff members. As you can imagine, the additional resettlement activities have placed an extra burden on our limited staff and financial resources. We need your help in order to be able to continue to serve your community in our usual effective and efficient manner. I hope this information is useful to you. Our volunteer and professional leaders would be pleased to meet with you and discuss our role in your community. While we have not received an allocation from your community recently, we believe the time is right for your Federation to join with the many other communities with Jewish Family Services that allocate to us. Your support will provide important benefits for the entire Jewish Community in North America and in your own community. Please feel free to call upon us for further information.
