Page 2 WHEEL OF ROTARY APRIL 20, 1950 TODAY'S SPEAKER Cal Corey, a Las Vegas "boy who re-cently accompanied Senator Pat McCarran on his tour of Europe, will be our guest speaker for today., ..We have "been unable to get in touch with Cal, but assume that he will devote his dis-course to a description of conditions in Europe as he saw them. * * * * * * * * * * * * NEXT WEEK Carl Hyde, chairman of vocational service, will "be our speaker for next w e e k . . . . We are informed that Carl's subject will "be Employer-iinployee rela-tions, which, in view of the rather messed-up condition of affairs in Las Vegas, should prove very interesting. * * * * * * * * * * * * LAST WEEK Our subject last week was The Atlan-tic Union. Program Chairman Les Ed-wards introduced Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners George Franklin, who introduced the speaker of the day, Mrs. Ellen Garwood Mrs. Garwood gave a very interesting account of The Atlantic Union, explaining way this was necessary as a supporting organiza-tion to the United Nations. She asked everyone to -write their Senators and Congressmen on the subject so that res-olutions on the subject may be passed before Congress adjourns. * * * * * * * * * * * NEW DIRECTORS Last week we elected as our Board of Directors for the coming year: HARRY ALLEN, JOHN BEVILLE, ED CON-VERSE, WALTER JOHNSON, ALLYE LAWS ON, PAUL McDERMOTT and DICK RONZONE. The Board, in turn, will select the President, Secretary and Trea-surer for the coming year beginning July 1st. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * FULSTONE TWINS Perhaps you remember when Tex Blackman said a few words about the tv/ins from Smith Valley, Nevada. He then quickly passed some ballots I Look on Page 42 of the May Ro-tarian for further details. Inci-dentally, Tex is promoting a very worthwhile project just now—the Nevada Citizens' Committee. * * * * * * * * * * * * * HERBERT HOOVER ON THE CITY vs. BOYS I f there are any members of Las Vegas Rotary Club who did not read the article by Herbert Hoover in the April Rotarian, they should do so n o w . . . . The article is a very delightful discussion of boys' life, and the fact that so busy a man as Herbert Hoover should take the time to write such an article for The Rotarian shows in what high standing this magazine is held. * * * * * * * * * * * * * FRANKFORT 100$ The Rotary Club of Frankfort, Kansas, is celebrating one full year of 100$ attendance! Pretty fine for a 39 member club. (This item is contributed by Wayne Kirch, -mer Marysville, Kansaser.) ^ WHEEL OF ROTARY Page 3 AL TRAVELS Our foreign correspondents report our member A1 Corradetti as having touched in Ireland and at Berne, Switzerland. His next stop as sched-uled is Rome, April 22nd As yet we have no report from Paris. Possibly that WB.S "because A1 did not give his right name when he painted the town; or possibly for fear of international relations. * * * * * * * * * * * * * THROUGH THE SOUTH Bill and Ruth Perron are spending a pleasant vacation driving through the South. They e:qpect to be in Hew Orleans today. On their way so far, they have visited Carlsbad Caverns, Dallas, and other interesting places in the South. * * * * * * * * * * * * * MAT SWEENEY ILL Maj Sweeney has been a guest at the "Hardy Hotel" for a few days but is now reported as being badk on his feet again, Maj, we are sorry you did not hear from your old club while you were illj * * * * * * * i!*****************,!,! *y **.**•**=>* VISITING ROTARIANS At our last meeting we had with us the following visiting Rotarians: R.R. "Bob" Kinney La Crescenta Paul Parmenter "Dad" Brinker P. A. Rowe L. S. Startin Wade Taylor Les Alexander E * Baker Phoenix, Ariz. East Liberty, Pa. San Francisco Boulder City Boulder City Boulder City Jolm Airy Albuquerque, N.M. A. S. Morris Everett, Wash. Irving Williams Bakersfield, Cal. F. J. Schneider Los Angeles, Cal. We were pleased to have so fine a group of Rotarians visit us. President Leonard invites you to come again, very soon. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ON TO PHOENIX President Leonard much regrets that there has not been a more gen-erous support of the Club's "On to Phoenix" project, scheduled for to-morrow, April 2 1 s t . . . . For the sake of the prestige of this Rotary Club and of Las Vegas, Leonard points out, there should be a large delega-tion of our members at the meeting in Phoenix. A .short time ago at our invi-tation, Phoenix and the Rotary Clubs of neighboring cities, sent a delegation of 25 to 30 members to visit us and they put on a very interesting program, consisting chiefly of a description of the Arizona Central Valley Project. For the sake of courtesy and to maintain the prestige Las Vegas enjoys in the hearts and minds of the people of Arizona, there should be a large delegation from Las Vegas to the phoenix meeting, at which we are to be honored guests. The trip may be made in com-fort and without loss of any con-siderable time by Bonanza Airlines at the very cheap rate ©f $30 for the round trip - provided we have eleven or more members making the --—- -over- trip. To have less than that would be something of a disgrace after the fine crowd Phoenix sent to Las Vegas. Of cotirse, those to whom time is not a vital matter, may with pleasure and profit make the trip "by automobile and take several clays to view the won-ders of Arizona, including that supreme wonder and beauty, Grand Canyon of the Colorado. If you have never been in Phoenix, you will find that a wonder city which you will never regret visit-ing. In added reason why we should send a large delegation to Phoenix is that Max Kelch has been chosen to conduct the program in behalf of Las Vegas, and he should have the support of all mem-bers of Las Vegas Rotary Club. * * * * * * * * * * * * * OUR MOTTO Perhaps you will remember that last year at the Convention of Rotary Inter-national, action was taken to leave the motto, "He Profits Most Who Serves Best," off of Rotary letterheads and envelopes. This action was taken because of the difficulties of translation into foreign languages It is reported that the question will be again brought up at the convention in Detroit in June. The Columbus, Ohio, Rotary Club, suggests that there is certainly nothing wrong with the word "Profit", and points out that a profit may be in many forms other than $$$$$. What do you think? DETROIT CONVENTION President Percy Hodgson wishes to call attention to the very lib-eral attendance provisions for the Detroit Convention: "One delegate and one altern-ate may attend for each fifty mem-bers or major fraction in each club." Each club, no matter how small, is entitled to one delegate and one alternate. Both delegates and al-ternates may be accompanied by any number of members of their immed-iate families. If there are more Rotarians desiring to attend than number of delegates and alternates to which the club is entitled, they may be named proxies for other clubs in the district not sending their full complement of delegates. The dis-trict Governor or convention chair-man can suggest clubs which may have available proxies.
