December 2005 Cheshvan/Kislev 5766 USY The USY board organized many recent events for teens to enjoy! One of our favorite events was Sushi with the Rabbi. The teens met at Sushi Fever to enjoy sushi together and ask Rabbi Goodman many questions about being Kosher and any other topic. The teens even asked the Rabbi about his feelings on dadng teens that are not Jewish. It was so excidng when the Rabbi invited us to join him for a Shabbat lunch at his house after an upcoming Saturday morning service. We are definitely looking forward to learning more from the Rabbi. On November 18th, Sr. and Jr. USYers all gathered together for Shabbat dinner at the Kirsh home. The teens lit the Shabbat candles, sang all the blessings, and discussed what they personally do or can start doing to make Shabbat meaningful to them. All of these activities created a very special Shabbat dinner. The next Teen Shabbat dinner will be the third Friday in February. If anyone is interested in hosting the event at their home please contact Lauren Frydman at counselkids8@yahoo.com. Youth Board members (Yoni Schwartz, Elyse Kraft, Ashley Mitchell, Jeff Fine, Shannie Schwartz, Brianna Kirsh, and Evan Savar) recently attended a Leadership Education and Development Training at Camp Ramah in Ojai, CA. They met with other Far West LTSY chapter board members to learn how their position can be used effectively to strengthen our local USY chapter. It was an intense weekend full of praying and learning about the true meaning of being a Mensch. We are looking forward to our December events, and hope that we will increase our USY membership and have more teens attend the events. December 6th -Have "S'more" fun with USY at our Lounge Night (5:00 - 7:00 p.m. in the TBS Youth Lounge) ?3 / December 11th -Sharing Hanukkah Traditions in the Frydmarfs Kitchen (6:00 - 8:30 p.m.) December 28th - SATO event (TBA) B'Nai Mitzvah BRANDON BROWN, son of Larry & Roberta Brown and brother of Evan, will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, December 17, 2005 at Temple Beth Sholom. Brandon, currently in the 7th grade at Becker Middle School, plays the cello in the orchestra and enjoys reading, science, inventing, drawing, and video games. For his mitzvah project, Brandon is collecting supplies and donations for Noah's Animal House which is adjacent to the Shade Tree Shelter. Information and collection containers are set up in the school and temple lobbies. Midrasha November brought us one very special event: Jews for Judaism - an organization which, among other things, provides the tools necessary for communities and individuals to fight against propaganda from groups such as the Jews for Jesus - held an important program at Temple Beth Sholom on Wednesday, November 17th which the entire Midrasha attended. It was an important event held in anticipation of an upcoming Jews for Jesus gathering here in Las Vegas in the upcoming weeks. We look forward to more special programming in the future. Adult Education by Jon Mitzmacher, Director of Education Religious School by Jon Mitzmacher, Director of Education November in the Religious School was a terrific month! Why? Because we actually had a full month of school! No holidays! No special events! It was just a wonderfully normal month where teachers and students had a chance to reconnect and reestablish our rhythm. After all the excitement of the holidays, it was nice to pause, take a deep breath, and begin a new. The calm, however, won't last long. December is a short month, jam-packed with exciting events. You are all invited to join us on Saturday, December 3rd, as Kitah Vav (Sixth Grade) helps lead the morning service. Kitah Vav will be the first of our grades . to lead Shabbat service Vav, will be Kitah Hay (Fifth Grade) whose service will take place on Friday, December 9th. During the course of the year, all our Religious School grades take a turn to lead services and show off how much they have learned. December will close with the Hanuk-kah Flashlight Mystery Program held in two parts: Grades PreK through Kitah Hay (Fifth Grade) will have its program on Sunday, December 11th; Grades Vav & Zayin (Sixth & Seventh Grades) will have its program on Wednesday, December 14th. What's a "Hanukkah Flashlight Mystery Program"? You'll have to wait until Hanukkah to find out! In addition to these activities, the Religious School is pleased to be participating in Temple Beth Sholom's Hanukkah Festival which will be held on Wednesday, December 14th. Temple Beth Sholom was happy to participate in the nationwide Read Hebrew America program by offering a crash course in reading Hebrew on Sunday, November 20th. Beginning at 10:00 AM, this three-hour course gave all the tools one needs to begin reading Hebrew. The turn out was tremendous and we can look forward to many new Hebrew-readers in our congregation! We would like to apologize for the less-than-ideal dissemination of Adult Education brochures and materials this year. We know that many courses began before information reached the entire congregation and that were some confusion about registration in general. At this point in time, all the Adult Education courses that have been planned are either ongoing or have been completed. We recognize, however, that there may be many of you still interested in taking courses. In light of this we ask to please let us know if you are interested in additional Adult Education offerings. We would be happy - thrilled! - to arrange for additional courses if there is interest. Our religious school students depicted during one of many "there's fun in learning" moments. Jewish Film Festival Temple Beth Sholom will once again sponsor the opening night of the Las Vegas Celebration of Jewish Film. $ 10 tickets are now on sale at the temple for Campfire, which will be shown on Thursday, January 12 at 7:00 PM at the Suncoast Theatre. Winner of five Israeli Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Campfire is a shining example of the nuanced, exquisitely acted dramas that are giving Israel a prominent place on the international cinematic map. The setting is Jerusalem, 1981. Rachel, a recently widowed mother of two teenage girls, hopes to start a new life with her family by joining a religious settlement in the West Bank. But she must first convince the community's leader, Motke (the formidable Assi Dayan), that she is a worthy candidate. Despite her ideological passion, Rachel's independent ways collide with Motke's authority. He pressures her to marry and lead a more conventional life?a plan her rebellious older daughter immediately sets out to sabotage. Younger daughter Tami is more supportive, but soon experiences a trauma that will test Rachel's priorities as mother, settler, and believer. Michael Eshet gives a delicately shaded and moving performance as the single mother of an all-female household. Beloved Israeli actor Moshe Ivgy plays her freethinking suitor, Yossi, who quietly introduces the promise of finding love and acceptance outside the "tribe" of settlers. From the director Joseph Cedar Time of Favor (winner of six Israeli Academy Awards including Best Picture 2000), whose own parents were religious Zionists, lends an insider's authenticity to the social pressures and ideological zeal of the tight-knit settler community, comes Campfire, a story of one woman's personal battle, but also a portrait of a political movement that has forever affected millions of lives in the Middle East. The Las Vegas Celebration of Jewish Film will take place from January 12-16 at the Century Suncoast 16 in the Suncoast Hotel & Casino. Beth Sholom Bulletin Monthly Darfur Update by Rabbi Felipe Goodman If you didn't have a chance to hear The Rabbi's sermon the first day of Rosh Hashana, it is important that you familiarize yourself with the situation in Darfur. For those of you who do not know what Darfur is, now is an important time to learn that word. The Darfur is a region of the Sudan (in Africa) about the size of California. In this region, militias, called the Janjaweed, that are aided by the Islamic Fundamentalist government, are murdering thousands of innocent people, because they are Christian. As this goes on, the United States sits by without action. On Wednesday November 9, Mark John of Reuters News Service stated, "The 'Janjaweed' militiamen stand accused of a devastating campaign of rapes, killings and burning during a two-year conflict that has claimed tens of thousands of lives and forced 2 million people from their homes." Despite terrible occurrences such as Katrina, the earthquake in Pakistan, and recent terrorism in the Middle East, we still cannot forget Darfur. There are many parallels between this genocide, and the Holocaust of our own people. In Nazi Germany, the U.S. did not take action for a long time. We cannot let history repeat itself. From now on, this monthly space in our bulletin will serve as both a reminder and also as an awareness update as to what is happening in The Darfur. There are many ways we can help. First of all, the synagogue is selling green bracelets which say, "Save Darfur." These help in two ways. First, all of the money goes to organizations that build shelters and bring food and water to the refuges in Darfur. Also, more importantly they help raise awareness of what is going on 8 in this region, just by wearing it. Another way to help is to sign a nationwide petition that will be circulating through the synagogue soon. It asks President Bush to mandate through the United Nations to help save the civilians and to aid the failing African Union mission that is in process now. If you are unable, for whatever reason, to help in these ways, at least inform others about the situation there now, so we can raise nationwide awareness to help solve this massacre. Please look for monthly ... .... ? _ ? _ updates in the bulletin. We also look forward to getting many of the arms of our congregation involved in the Darfur awareness campaign. Bereavement Group by Rita Tell, Facilitator Everyone is looking forward to a Happy, Healthy and Safe New Tfear as we quickly approach 2006. Sadly, not everyone will be lucky enough to have a perfect New Year ... That is why Temple Beth Sholom, in its goal to help its members and the community-at-large, makes a "bereavement and grief support group" available weekly. Being with others, sharing your feelings or just listening and learning from those who truly understand, is very comforting. We welcome everyone with open arms. Whether the loss is brand new, or in the past, the "get togethers" benefit everyone. The meetings are held every Tuesday morning from 10:00 am until 11:30 am. Free coffee and refreshments are served. For further information please call Rita Tell, facilitator of the group, at 255-0043. 4th Annual Z'Havah Hanukkah Party Thursday, December 15th 7-9 pm Jacquie Frye's Home, 905 Contadero Place Please bring a dairy or pareve dessert or appetizer, a wrapped gift not to exceed $20 and a canned good.
