LAS VESAS VALLEY ^ L A S V E G A S J / iS / S Vol. 1, No. 174. , « 3 ^ » 1 1 ’ LAS VEGAS, NEVADA, WEDNESDAY, JAN. 24, 195L Seek W ater Rate 50% Increase Effective Feb. 26 Unless Protested dtt A hike in local water rates, with a 50 percent boost for residential consumers, and higher in some quarters of the business district, is being sought by the Las Vegas Land and Water Co. in a notice served yesterday on the Nevada Public Service Commission and the City of Las Vegas. The city is expected to oppose -------------- ;---------- ------------------ ?— the rate increase and will almost certainly ask the PSC to hold a hearing to determine if the increase is justified. The company set Feb. 26 as the date the city water rate schedule will be inaugurated, unless the PSG rules otherwise. However, the rate increase undoubtedly is being instituted to help defray the costs of proposed increase in the water supply and new water line improvements, for which local residents Jong have agitated. New feeder lines involving installation of 2,600 feet of pipe at a cost of $100,000 in the downtown business area, and the scheduled major water main line for the 14th Street addition are among the company’s developments. Recently company officials assured more water for Las Vegas consumers during critical emergency periods of the summer months, after a hearing before the PSC to “show cause” why the service should not be improved. Preliminary well-pumping tests were made which will increase water production to more than three and a half million gallons The increased production will be made through the installation of turbine and centrifugal pumps on specified wells. The new water rate schedule is comprehensive, and pin-points all classifications, both business and residential, served by the company throughout the Las Vegas area. There is no metered water service here. Single-family residences, which have a flat $2.00 minimum rate, will have under the new schedule a bSsic charge of $2.10 a month, with 15 cents per month charge for each additional room. There also is a 30 cents charge for each tub or shower, and an- (Continued on Page .2) , N E V A D A R a is e ! ..1 | j ? !4 1 other 30~ cents fee for each toilet jin the home. j The first 7,000- square feet of jlawn watering is included in the original cost, but each .additional 140 square feet will cost an extra two cents.
