ARTS AND HUMANITIES COMMITTEE JUNE 7, 2003
Reminiscent of the intergenerational cultural experiences of our youth was the recent other Daughter Tea. The tea was held on May 18 at the Holy Trinity AM.E. Church, from 2-4 p.m.
The AKAteens, a select group of high school young ladies under the mentorship of the chapter was featured in a special tribute to their mothers. Joining them were several sorors, many of whom brought their daughters and mothers.
Tables were adorned with fine linens, lace, silver and crystal( all from the Theta Theta Omega store houses). Pink and white roses added the fragrance and ambiance of elegance. For engaging conversations and interaction, promoting the bonds of sisterhood and motherhood for which Alpha Kappa, Alpha proudly stands.
Sorors were true models of tea hostesses. Attired in their Sunday afternoon finery, heels and hats, everyone enjoyed a delectable menu of tea, tea sandwiches, frappe, punch and delicious cake. The program for the afternoon was just as delectable.
The theme of the program, “Young at Art”, featured talent presentations of poetry, song and dance by talented AKAteens and sorors. On display were several pieces of art by local African American artists and loaned to us for the occasion by the Trinity Gallery of Black Art. Soror Barbara McCants-Hill provided beautiful background music on the piano. Our Basileus gave a warm and gracious welcome. AKAteens , sorors, and guests alike applauded this first Mother-Daughter tribute and expressed hope that it will become a tradition in our chapter.
The Arts and Humanities Committee provided leadership for the activity.
Committee members are: K.weeda Adams, Betty Bell, Annette Craighead, Sharon Walton, Willa White, Lavonne Lewis, Barbara Mcants-Hill, Wuin Rivers, Celese Rayford, Ina Dorman, Rosalind Williams, Jacqulyn Shropshire, and Sandra Bass. Sorors Barbara Kirkland and Ethel Archibald and Pendalita Toney , and other sorors, assisted significantly. Bertha Pendleton and Edna States chaired the committee. Our sincere
thanks to these and other sorors for their donations and work toward this first effort.
