HONORARY DEGREE
Dr. David Bruce Dill — Doctor of Laws
Dr. David Bruce Dill, renowned scientist and pioneer in kinetic physiology, your more than half century of scholarly leadership has deservedly achieved international reputation. In 1931, seeking to determine why more than a dozen men perished of heat exhaustion during the construction of Hoover Dam, your work with Harvard University’s Fatigue Laboratory first brought you to Nevada. Your accurate diagnosis and the prescription of extra salt for the workers prevented further deaths, and thus you early demonstrated the value of your applied scientific expertise. Since then, in other studies of physical stress and strain, you have researched man’s adaptations to high altitudes, severe climates, and heavy exercise. Now in your eighties, you continue your experimentation on a six day a week schedule, still attracting leading biologists to your laboratory. In your long and distinguishedBareer, you have published more than 250 research papers and the list of your accomplishments is still growing. Few scholars can claim they have reached the pinnacle of their profession, but tonight we honor a scientist who has truly attained this level.
DISTINGUISHED NEVADANS
Juanita Greer White
Juanita Greer White, educator, assemblywoman and former Regent of the University, today we cite you as a Distinguished Nevadan for your significant contributions to the development of our state. Your career as research chemist and college professor gave you insight into the requisites of higher education, and this you translated into action as a member of our Board of Regents. Subsequently, as a state legislator, you have actively supported public education as well as the health and welfare of Nevada’s citizens. Your aid and counsel also was available to the Clark County Economic Opportunity Board as one of its founding members, and you have served with distinction as the state’s executive commissioner to the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. Numerous agencies of public trust bear the mark of your ability and wise judgment, and your fellow citizens have markedly benefited from your vision of Nevada as a place of opportunity for all.
James Cashman, Jr.
James Cashman, Jr., outstanding businessman and civic leader, your contributions to the people of this state are worthy of the highest recognition. As a native Las Vegan and member of a pioneer Nevada family, you have spearheaded the development and progress of your community for more than a quarter of a century. While building one of the most respected business enterprises in the state, you also have devoted your versatile talents to a parallel career in public service. To cite just a few of these involvements, you have been president of the Greater Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the United Fund of Clark County, member of the State Planning Board, and Trustee of the University’s Land Foundation. Your capacity for leadership has been unbounded and highly effective, thus we salute you as a Distinguished Nevadan for your constructive impact upon our community and state.

THE UNLV MACE
The University Mace, which has its traditions deeply rooted in history, is carried on ceremonial occasions at the head of the academic procession by the Grand Marshal, whose symbolic duty is the protection of the University, its persons and its processes.
Originally a weapon, the earliest maces were made of iron and were capable of breaking armor. Bishops, forbidden by canon law to bear swords, sometimes took the mace with them into battle. The mace consisted of a long club with a ball of iron, steel or brass at one end, and was used in warfare as late as the 16th century.
The mace’s use as an instrument of ceremony, however, began about the year 1250 in England and France, and is still used widely today in university commencement programs as well as in governmental ceremonies.
The UNLV Mace has been cast from polished metal and features a black hardwood staff. Facets of the cubical top embody the University’s seal; a symbolic depiction of the Statue of Liberty; a likeness of Renaissance scholar Leonardo da Vinci representing the integration of knowledge from many fields and a shelf of books flanked by artists’ brushes.
Designer of the mace is Erik Gronborg, chairman of the Art Department. The mace bearer is Dr. John Wright, professor of history, one of the University’s longest-tenured faculty members.
ACADEMIC DRESS
The history of academic dress reaches far back into the early days of the oldest universities. It appears that academic clothing was first introduced and worn at Cambridge and Oxford Universities in the thirteenth century.
The European custom was carried to America with the establishment of our own colleges and universities. In 1895 an academic code of dress was adopted and the standards accepted by most of the colleges and universities in the United States. Today, the black robe, hood and cap are generally worn.
Three different types of black gowns may be distinguished in the academic procession. The bachelors gowns have long pointed sleeves; the masters gowns have oblong sleeves with an arc cut away in the front. The doctors gowns are faced with velvet and have bell-shaped sleeves with three bars of velvet.
The Oxford cap, the so-called mortarboard, is black and has a long tassel fastened to the middle of the top that is worn pendant over the left front of the cap. The hood, draped from the shoulders, denotes by its length and colors the degree and the institution which conferred the degree.
