TOTAL MONTHLY INCOME _______________________
minus TOTAL MONTHLY EXPENDITURES _______________________
equals your MONTHLY CASH FLOW _______________________
Now that you have evaluated your monthly spending habits, following are some financial rules of thumb for you to consider:
The Debt Rule: Your total debt (not including your mortgage) should be less than 20% of your annual take-home pay.
The Housing Rule: Spend no more than 30% of your monthly take-home pay on rent or mortgage payments.
The Savings Rule: Save at least 10% of your take-home pay each month.
Pay yourself first.

ITS TIME TO GET YOUR TAX ACT TOGETHER
Your mailbox has been filled with income and investment statements so you know that it is a sure sign of tax season. It is imperative that you gather receipts and save documents that apply to the completion of your IRS 1040 tax form.
This basic checklist will assist you in having the right data at your fingertips as you start crunching the tax numbers. Remember this is a “basic" list. Individual circumstances may require additional information and forms.
INCOME
_____Form W-2 for wages
____Forms 1099,1099-DIV, 1099-INT, 1099-0ID for interest and dividend statements
_____Form 1099-R Distributions from
Pensions, Annuities, Retirement or Profit-Sharing Plans, IRA’s, Insurance Contracts, etc.
_____Form 1099B for securities and sales transactions during 1998
**This statement only indicates your sales. Purchase invoices or canceled checks that show how much you paid for the stock and the date the purchase was made should also be available.
**If you held securities through a stock split, have available any statements or company letters about the split. This affects the calculation of your cost basis in the stock.
____Year-end bank, brokerage, and mutual fund reports.
DEDUCTIONS
______Form 1098 mortgage interest paid on your home
______Real estate tax payment receipts if not included on mortgage statement
______State income tax paid in 1998 (Nevada does not have a state income tax)
______Auto registration receipt(s)
______Charitable contribution receipts or canceled checks. Deducting charitable contributions requires extra paperwork if you made a single cash or noncash contribution of $250 or more or the total noncash donations to all sources was over $500. You will need to complete Form 8283.
______Unreimbursed business expenses - Check IRS Publications 17, 535, and Business Expenses for details on deductibles expenses.
______Medical Deductions - Collect medical bills and claim deductions amounts that exceed 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income. Deductible medical expenses generally includes hospital expenses you paid, lab work, dental and eye care costs, prescription medicine and insurance premiums. You may not deduct medical costs that are reimbursed to you by an insurer.
