The service will be held outside in Jessica's Garden. After a brief Maariv (evening service), candles will be lit and held in small cups by the participants. The ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av, commemorates such national tragedies as the destruction of the First and Second Temple, the fall of Bar Kochba's fortress, and the expulsion from Spain. Like Yom Kippur, Tisha B'Av is a f u l l fast day, from sundown to nightfall. I then explain that this year we began a Monday and Thursday morning minyan in addition to our Sunday morning service. Our hope is that some day in the not too distant future we will have a minyan every morning. It is interesting to note that most of the prospective members who ask about our minyan have no intention of attending the minyan on a regular basis. Yet, it is important to them that we have one. While for some this may come as a surprise, it makes a great deal of sense to me. Why is it important for our synagogue to have a minyan? A minyan not only provides opportunities for prayer, Torah study, and camaraderie, but it also serves as a support group for the members of our community. After experiencing a loss, the minyan enables one to recite Kaddish for a loved one. It is the most basic but significant way we can help those in mourning. Our presence means so much to those who are saying Kaddish and the spiritual l i f t that comes from knowing you helped make a minyan is indescribable. Unfortunately, we have not been able to f u l f i l l this mitzvah every Sunday, Monday, and Thursday. There have been days when seven, eight, or nine adults have been present in our small chapel, and we have not been able to say Kaddish. By definition, a minyan is made up of at least ten Jewish adults, and fewer than ten does not constitute a F R O M T H E R A B B I w minyan. Our Minyan Chair, Herb Zola, has worked hard to recruit more people to help make a minyan. He has probably heard every excuse known to mankind for why one cannot attend. I do understand the rigors of a daily schedule and am well aware that many people physically cannot work minyan into their schedule. Having said that, I also know that many of our congregants could potentially attend minyan at least once a week, but have chosen not to make it a priority. If you fall into this latter category, I urge you to take a serious look at your schedule, and make a strong effort to attend a minyan and f u l f i l l this important mitzvah. If you do not feel comfortable following along with the service...don't worry...we will help you. Before long, you will find yourself helping others! It is easy to take for granted that the synagogue will have a minyan when you need to say Kaddish in observance of a Yahrtzeit or when in mourning. But as you can imagine, if we all took this approach, we would never have a minyan. Being part of a community requires us to "be there" for others...not just when it is convenient for us, but when our presence is truly needed. We really do need you. Please come and v o l u n t a r i l y serve on Jewry Duty. Minyan meets Monday and Thursday mornings at 7:00am ? Sunday mornings at 9:30am ~ Rabbi Jeremy Wiederhorn O w i 1 . .n-uan ? Midbar Kodesh Temple's First Blood Drive is a Success J U L Y / A U G U S T 2001 Midlar Kodesh continued from page 1 of Lamentations is recited while the congregation sits on the ground or on low stools as a sign of mourning. The Hebrew t i t le of the Book of Lamentations is "Eikhah", derived from the opening word of the book. The Book of Lamentations is actually the third of the five Megillot of the Tanach. It contains five poems. Four of the five poems form an acrostic, meaning that each of the verses begins with a different letter of the Hebrew alphabet and are arranged in alphabetical order. It is our tradition at Midbar Kodesh to observe this fast day by inviting the entire ^ o m m u n i t y to participate in the reading of the Book of Lamentations. Each of the five chapters will be given to a member of the Jewish community, who will chant Eikhah according to the traditional mournful melody. On Sunday morning, July 29, 2001 the Congregation will continue the observance of the fast of Tisha B'Av. At the regular 9:30 AM Sunday morning minyan, the Torah will be read and the Haftorah will be chanted from the Book of Jeremiah. On Tisha B'av, the morning service is recited without Tallit or Tefillin. Anyone interested in participating in this special service is invited to contact Rabbi Wiederhorn at the Midbar Kodesh office at 454-4848. Tsflwsr f continued from page 7 ^ ?
