I TULE SPRINGS, CLARK COUNTY, NEVADA Diaiy entries of Charles Rozaire Southwest Museum Expedition May 8-18, 19$$ May 7 (Saturday) Brealfast at Harrongtpns1 in San Fernando Stuart Peck and Dee Simpson came. Stuart Peck & Dee Simpson went in the former1s new open Jeep, while I drove M.Ro Harrington (MRH) in the SW Museum's truck. Heavy rain while driving through Mint Canyon. Had a flat tire betwwen- Pear-blossom and VictorvilleD Spare went flat just into Barstow. Lunch in Barstow at 2:30 FM. Bought new tire;; fixed spare. At Manix Station met up with SP and DS. Camped over night near Sloan Service, about 10 miles outside Las Vegas. May 8 (Sunday) Arrived Las Vegas at 8:30 AM, met the Wheelers who guided us out to the locale near Tule Springs, ca 3 miles off Hy 9$, Had lunch and were barely through when it rained. Hurriedly set up camp. Waited out the rain and then scouted out the locales of bone and charcoal. May 9 (Monday) Did excavation work at various locales at Tule Springs site. May 10 (Tuesday) Continued digging at Tule Springs site. MoRo Harrington left for Los Angeles with the (S.M0) Wheelers at Noon, leaving SP, DS and I. Very hot afternoon. May 11 (Wednesday) Continued excavation work. Very hot day. May 12 (Thursday) Continued excations at Tule Springs site. Very hot day. May 13 (Friday) Excavated in the AM, In the afternoon, DS, SP and I went into Las Vegas (ca, __ miles away) in Stuart's Jeep to phone Mr. Harringtono» ~MR will return late Monday with the Wheelers. We watched kid's parade being held for "Helldorado" celebration. May lU (Saturday) An uncomfortably wincty day. Finished up previous diggings and wrote notes in AM In afternoon went to elephant deposit and dug test trenches while Dee and Stuart surveyed looking for new sites. MR's tent partially blew over ca. 10 PM. SAmples almost got scattered. May 1$ (Sunday) Windy morning. Let up toward afternoon and evening. Made test of locale showing no bone or ash. Helped with excavation of camel deposit with SP and DS om AM. In afternoon we dug at elephant deposit. May 16 (Monday) Spent the morning and early afternoon digging a£ elephant deposit, Exposed most of area and bones for MR to see. In afternoon dug above Ash Bed §1 and wrote notes. MR came with Wheeler about 7 PM, Slight breezes. During week have been getting up about 6:30 AM and quit about 7 PM.
