Issue No. 3 KOL HARAV...The Rabbi's Voice The Flying Rabbi My dear friend and mentor, Rabbi Moshe M. Maggal, OBM, was known as The Flying Rabbi due to his vast northwestern territory of which he served as the rabbi. He was the sole rabbi for Montana. Wyoming, South Dakota and much of Idaho. Not necessarily the heart of the Jewish population, the Jews still needed a rabbi, so Rabbi Maggal went by plane to conduct every life-cycle and service. Rabbi Maggal carried a portable Ark with him wherever he flew. I was fortunate that he left the Ark to me upon his death, now displayed at Adat Ari El. There is now another rabbi described by some as The Flying Rabbi for other reasons for which I will explain. Over five months ago I was contacted by comedian David Brenner with whom we share mutual friends. He knew of my former life in show business and as a gymnast He told me that he had an eccentric friend who wanted to be married on a live TV show. He wanted to "fly" the rabbi in on a Peter Pan like rigging to the stage to perform the wedding. Considering my background, David felt I was uniquely suited for this unusual feat "Would you please consider doing this wedding for my crazy friend," he asked? He said that it had to be kept secret as no one would be told that the wedding would take place, not even the family members and news media. After I told him I would consider it under certain conditions, we arranged a meeting. I planned to meet with the TV producers and David's crazy friend the following week. The meeting took place in David Brenner's suite at the Venetian Hotel where he was headlining that week. In the room were David and his two producers, Marty and Randy. David told me that his grandfather was a rabbi and that he had great respect for rabbis. I was looking forward to meeting the mystery groom. David then told me that his eccentric friend was really him. He and his girlfriend of twelve years wanted to tie the knot on his HBO special. Both of the producers are also Jewish; Marty is married to an Israeli and their four children speak Hebrew. We proceeded with the details of the proposed wedding along with the idea of David asking during the test minutes of the show 'Is there a rabbi in the house?' They would then fly me from the uppermost balcony with wires to the stage. They wanted four models to bring on the Chupah and this real wedding needed to take place within four minutes. The Ketubah (marriage contract) would be signed before the show. I was not concerned with the flying aspect I knew the company, Flying by Foy, who have flown everyone since the original Peter Pan. I had confidence that they could keep me safe. I told David and his producers that I understood the wedding would be during a nationally broadcast comedy special, but marriage in Judaism is holy and that there needed to be reverence in the ceremony. I requested that the models be dressed in modest floor length gowns. I felt that had to be my position as a rabbi. This was the area in which the producers challenged 'Ah Rabbi, this is a Las Vegas special, what will people expect?" I made my point dear and they assured they would comply with my request (continued on Page 3) Rabbi Gary M. I had a dilemma this month from which there seemed no way out For a week now, I have sat diligently at my computer every single day and attempted to carve out this month's column. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday all went by and by the end of each day, I was no closer to a column than I had been before. (In deference to our religious beliefs, and also to our Rabbi, I took Saturday off.) Finally, today, Sunday, I sat myself at my computer and gave me a good talking-to. I told me that writer's block was one thing, but this was getting a little ridiculous and I'd better snap out of it Still, I wound up playing solitaire for an hour, checking my favorite Internet sites and going over my schedule for the upcoming week instead of writing. Then my 11 year old son, Andrew, came over and inquired about what I was doing. "Hey, Mom, dont you have work to do?" he asked, eyeing me suspiciously. "Yeah, I do. I have to write my temple column, but I'm stuck, any ideas"? He cocked his head, thought a minute and said, "Why dont you write about what it means to be a Jew?" I started to laugh. "You mean in less than 800 words? Authors have written volumes on the subject. I dont think so, but thanks, anyway." But Andrew would not be dissuaded. "Well, why not? Why dont you write something personal - you know, what it means to be a Jew to a real person?" Suddenly, this seemed to be an interesting idea. He wasnt talking about a philosophical discourse on organized religion, but a personal viewpoint piece. The more I thought about K, the more I liked the idea. "Okay," I said, turning towards him. "What does being a Jew mean to you?" "Well, being a Jew should mean more than having a party when you are a Bar or Bat MKzvah. Being a Jew should be something you do and something you think about all the time." "What do you like most about being a Jew?" I asked. "I like the fact that we're different, not the same as everyone else, you know, not the mainstream." "What do you Nke least about being Jewish?" "Sometimes ifs kind of scary, for any minority, I think, because there are always people who dont like you because they dont understand you or because you are different than they are. You know, they're kind of afraid of you." "Why do you think being a Jew is important?" "Well, it's nice to know that I'm a Jew Hke every other Jew, that's something we have in common and that every Jew is like me. You know, we believe in the same things." After this conversation with my son, I sat down at my computer with renewed vigor. In less than 26 minutes, the column was written (record time, actually) and suddenly I had over 500 words on the screen. She attends eighth grade at Becker Middle School. Alyson has been going to Camp Tamarack for the last four years through the Jewish Community Center in Farmington Hills, Michigan. She has played soccer for the last seven years. She likes to dance and hopes to be on the Cimarron-Memorial Dance team when she goes to High School next year. Celebrate With Us the Bat Mitzvah of Ashley Nicole Ohriner HL My name is Ashley Ohriner and I have worked for half of my Bfe to prepare for the day when I would go from being a child to a Bat Mitzvah. In other words, I would grow up. I started my Jewish education at the age of eight, and shortly after the third grade I got a letter in the mail that told about a new Jewish School. (The Jewish Community Day School.) I quickly started thinking of ways to convince my parents that this school was good for me and my Hebrew education. Uttie did I know that my parents thought the same. Today I go to Cannon Middle School and I am thankful that I was able to attend such a school that teaches not only the basic skills, but also taught me how to grow up to be a good Jew. On my 13th birthday. December 31, 1M9,1 helped lead the Friday night Service. I was very honored that Rabbi Qolbart asked me to do such a mitzvah. I was confident that I would do great with the help and encouragement of other B'nai Mitzvah students. With the same help and encouragement from my family and friends, I know that my Bat Mitzvah wiH be wonderful. I would like of all of my Congregational Family to celebrate with me. Place: Adat Ari El 3310 S. Jones Boulevard Kol Harav (continued from page 1) Rehearsals took place on the Friday afternoon, the day before the performance. Everyone was aware that they had to rehearse me before Shabbat and I would not return until neariy show time after Shabbat had ended. However, even after receiving all of the measurements of me, the specially made harness did not fit It was nearly two hours after the beginning of the scheduled rehearsal that they finally had the equipment ready to rehearse my flying. This did not leave much time to get the bugs out The rigging had not been secured as they would have liked due to the unusual limitation of the anchoring position of the rig. The landing extension of the stage was smaller than they needed. After six attempts of landing me onto the stage, none were successful. Thank G-d for some large stagehands who kept catching me as I would hit the landing pad then swing off the stage. More work was needed to secure the rigging so it would not twist me crooked, and a larger landing extension needed to be constructed. Shabbat was approaching and I had to excuse myself to prepare for dinner and services. I would have to put my faith in G-d and the abilities of the crew to have everything ready for the show Saturday night During services I alerted my congregation that I was appearing on an HBO special the next night however, that was all I could tell them, and not to ask me anything else about my announcement I figured anyone who really wanted to catch me on TV would narrow down the possibilities. The end of Shabbat came and I hurried to the theater. They had people standing by to take my car and rush me to my dressing room. Shabbat ended at 6:14 PM and the show started at 7:00 PM. Though I was to be brought on during the last four minutes of the show, the crew had much work to get me prepared with make-up, the special harness under my clothing, and the microphone. This took forty minutes. I did not see or hear the show going on until I was brought into position on the spotlight balcony to hook me up to the flying cables. They hoisted me high above the audience, dangling me from the special rig- There I waited for my cue: 'Is there a rabbi in the house?* When the models brought out the Chupah I was surprised by their outfits, as they were not quite what I had requested. However, as they say, the show, I mean, the wedding must go on! It was to David, Elizabeth and their families a touching and meaningful, albeit funny, ceremony. The rest can be seen on David Brenner's "Back with a Vengeance" HBO special, and some have seen a dip on The Late Show with David Letterman, when Mr. Brenner hosted the show. The next day I flew to Florida (this time by plane) for a rabbinical convention where at least five rabbis had seen the show the night before and loved it They were fondly calling me The Las Vegas Flying Rabbi. I am happy to announce that part of my agreement to perform this unusual wedding, was that David Brenner would appear for Adat Ari El for a benefit performance. He agreed; I performed the wedding; and soon, G-d willing, Adat Ari El will announce when our event wiH take place. B'Shalom Rabbi Gary M. Golbart Koi Ail El The Lkxi't Voice Page 4 SISTERHOOD NEWS Sisterhood's High Tea was held on Sunday, February 27. We were served a wonderful lunch, cooked and prepared by Michelle Devore. Our theme was about love and we heard beautiful stories and poems about love. We wore beautiful hats again this year and we all went home with a nice gift from our gift exchange. We would like to thank Michete and Phil Devore for again graciously opening their home and for all the planning, cooking and for making the afternoon a wonderful time for all of us.
