mm night life scene Lisa Kim Scores Big Hit at Giro?╟╓s BY JOHN Lisa Kirk, too long ab- sent from the West Coast, returned Thursday night to put on one of the best supper club shows of the season at Frank Sennet Cirb?╟╓s. The versatile sing- er-dancer-mime s h o u 1 d keep the Sunset Strip club filled during her en- gagement which ends June 9. Miss Kirk's act, pro- duced arid written by Rob- ert Wells and staged by Tony Charmoli, gives the star ample opportunity to project a number of varied characters ranging from a Chinese girl in ?╟úLimehouse Blues?╟Ñ to a bullfighter in ?╟úFlamenco.?╟Ñ Dressed in appropriate, colorful gowns or costumes, using special material by Wells, David Saxon and Johnny Bradford, and backed by a great quartet of young men, The Four Saints, Miss Kirk gives a brilliant program that is more of a revue than a supper club act It's a dandy. Don Pip- pin conducts the Matty Malrieck orchestra. Sennes provides additional enter- tainment with the Donn Arden revue featuring 15 pretty girls. A GOOD SHOW Nat (King) Cole, urbane, smooth-singing entertain- er, began his seventh en- gagement at the Cocoanut 'Grove during the week and ran through a famil- iar but always welcome repertoire of ballads and jump tunes spiced by a crowd - pleasing novelty, ?╟úMr. Cole Won't Rock and Roll.?╟Ñ In this number Nat gives his impression of hpw a Presley-type singer would handle some of the more soulful ballads of the day. Very amusing, and the capacity audience ate it up. While it?╟╓s unneces- sary to describe Cole?╟╓s showmanship, one thing might be said on this point ?╟÷ he never gives a bad s h o w. The augmented Freddy Martin orchestra, conducted by Freddy him- self, provides strong back- ing for Cole. The star is preceded on the program by -the Mattison Trio, a very clever group of danc- er?║,;: JNext attraction, the Kingston Trio, opening June IS. SAHL, CHRISTY L.SCOTT into attentiveness. She performed well and de- served better. Buddy De Franco provides the mu- sic. Upstairs the DeCastro Sisters and Jack Costanzo and his bongo music, who also opened, rocked the room. Between the two openings traffic was terri- fic.1 BAND BOX OPEN Jumping on MGM's bandwagon ?╟÷ or perhaps chariot ?╟÷ Billy Gray opened his newly refurb- ished Band Box with a way-out ?╟úFairfax-v i 11 e?╟Ñ version of ?╟úBen-Hur?╟Ñ apt- ly cailed ?╟úBen-Hur-O- Witz.?╟Ñ The opening night audience laughed with ap- preciation at the antics of a cast which included Bil- ly, Mary McCarty, John Hawker, Buddy Lewis and Ypel Sharr. Much of the humor is in Yiddish so it helps 'if you understand the language. Each of the performers played in the sketch and took a solo turn. They were all good performers, but the end result was an over-long show. Mary McCarty was well received in her songs and comedy routines; John Hawker sang and doubled as M.C.; Buddy Lewis did some clever but tired im- itations; Yoel Sharr sang lovely Israeli tunes, and Ventriloquist Clifford Guest did amazing things with his limber lamyx. Billy Gray topped off the evening with jokes and patter. The Bob Bailey Trio did a remarkable job backing the show. SARAH BOOKED Songstress S a rah j Vaughan has been signed for an engagement of nine days at Frank Sennes' Moulin Rouge, beginning next Friday. Recently ?√ßpacted by Roulette Rec- ords, Miss Vaughan has a new hit for her initial re- lease, ?╟úWhat a Day.?╟Ñ Mer- cury also is releasing an album featuring several of her fine recordings. Cur- rent at the Moulin Rouge is Billy Daniels. Dell-Fin Thursday (Miss; Hawaii) is entertaining at Ye Little Club. Joni James has been; secured for a July 22 opening at the Grove.
