The members of Kappa Xi are submitting a proposal to Soror Grace to postpone rush and the membership intake process until the Spring 2000 semester. Kappa Xi is awaiting for approval from the Regional Director.
In an effort to encourage and maintain high scholastic achievement, members of Kappa Xi decided to hold study sessions together. They will meet every Sunday at the UNLV library for a minimum of two hours. A sign in form will be utilized to keep track of the study hours.
Kappa Xi is planning a schedule of events and speakers for the Charles I. West Adopt-A- School project. The staff members of the school are in the process of identifying the participants. The project will tentatively begin late October or early November.
Ideas for monthly sisterly relations activities are being planned by the Hodegos, Soror Erika Cruz. The first activity took place October 1,1999 at Cozymels restaurant for Soror Ranada’s birthday. A Kappa Xi retreat is being planned as well.
Workshops are continuing to be planned and presented in an effort to bridge the gap between being a candidate and becoming a new member and to facilitate building leadership and public speaking skills.( The topics will include, staying on your p’s and q’s, business writing, responsibilities of a committee chair, sisterly relations etc.). The ^Graduate Advisor presented a mini workshop on personality styles at their last chapter meeting.
Once a month, the Graduate Advisor attends the Greek Advisory Council meeting. I received a letter from Robert Ackerman, Vice President for Student Services to serve on the Select Committee on Greek Housing at UNLV. The meeting is comprised of advisors from all the greek organizations that are recognized on campus. Members of Delta Sigma Theta and Omega Psi Phi were present at the September meeting and said that they would be active participants at the meetings.
Kappa Xi has a representative from the chapter to attend the Ethnic Student Council and the National Panhellenic Council meeting. Alpha Kappa Alpha is the president for the NPHC for this school year. Soror Shawna McNair serves as the president and Soror Ranada Coleman is the representative. The NPHC meets every other Wednesday and the NPHC Executive Board meets on the opposite Wednesdays.
The NPHC sponsored the 2nd Annual Break the Ice Week for transfer students, returning students, and in coming Freshmen.

Graduate Advisor’s Report November 1999
'A proposal was submitted to the Regional Director, Grace B. Strauther to postpone Rush. The proposal included a timeline of program activities for the remainder of the semester and workshops to be presented at chapter meetings. Due to the late date and the semester is over mid December, it is anticipated that Rush will be held Spring 2000.
October 23, 1999 was national Make A Difference Day. Kappa Xi made up hygiene packs consisting of soap, deodorant, lotion, shampoo, and conditioner for abuse and neglected teenage girls in child Haven. A special thanks to Soror Ina Dorman for providing items for the hygiene packs.
A sisterly relations activity was held at Soror Shawna’s dormitory on November 5, 1999. Activities are to be scheduled on a monthly basis.
Members of Kappa Xi volunteered at Opportunity Village for the Safe Halloween event for children in the community. It was ajoint project with all members of the Greek community on UNLV’s campus. Kappa Xi also volunteered for the Ethnic Student Council’s Rebel Reggae activity. Boxes are being placed at the dorms to collect coats and clothes to be donated to the community. Kappa Xi will hang up posters, pass out flyers, and pass out red ribbons to all Greek organizations and students in support of the Shattered Lives campaign. November 8, 1999 has been designated "Shattered Lives Day." It is a campaign sponsored by KCEP, the Coiporation for Public Broadcasting, and EOB to encourage individuals not to drink and drive.
The Graduate Advisor will attend the Greek Advisor’s Council midyear review process. There are six chapters in jeopardy of being suspended and losing recognition on campus. Omega Psi Phi and Alpha Phi Alpha are the two chapters of the NPHC that might be suspended. The Graduate Advisor will attend the first Select Committee on Greek Housing meeting on November 10, 1999.
1999 Inter-Mountain Cluster and Undergraduate Leadership Institute Blazing New Trails: Come Home

Sorors Lisa McNeil, Erica Etienne, Wilisha Moore and myself attended the cluster conference and Undergraduate Leadership Institute. Soror Grace B. Strauther, Far Western Regional Director presented a report entittled "Trails of Excellence: 1999-2000. Areas addressed included the ShoeBox Project, all chapters paying EAF, all chapters paying the Awards fee, the Nominating Committee report for open positions at Boule, the election of a new Far Western Regional Director, the Constitution Committee submitted 1 recommendation to reduce Boule registration fees by 80% for Golden Sorors, possible chartering of new undergraduate chapters in Reno, Oregon, and Bakersfield, regional conference will be May 4-7 2000 in Anaheim, CA(no onsite registration).
Soror LaVern Tarkington, member of the Regional Leadership Team presented a survey to address the leadership needs of the Region. Workshops will be presented at Regional Conference. International Committee Reports. No report given for Connections because no one was present. Soror Marlene Hansberry presented the Program report. She went over each target area and the international projects for each target. Soror Frances Battle addressed Membership by giving suggestions for reactivation and reclamation. All attendees watched the Sisterhood Video narrated by Soror Norma S. White, Supreme Basileus.
There were two workshops. One was on program strategies that work and the other on black skin care.
The Undergraduate Leadership Institute concluded the conference. Issues addressed included, MIP, communication, international headquarters accountability, conference costs, informationals, and input for regional conference.
