    UNLV to honor 1964 grad
    By Debra D. Bass
    LAS VEGAS SUN
A member of UNLV’s first graduating class calls the institution’s transformation from “Tumbleweed Tech” to an internationally recognized university astounding.
“It’s incredible,” said Jon Cobain, who has the distinction of being the first person to walk across the stage at UNLWs first graduation ceremony in 1964.
“When I went there, there were four buildings - a one-story library, a gymnasium, Grant Hall and Frazier Hall — and there was nothing but raw desert in between. And when it rained you couldn’t drive down Maryland Parkway to get to campus.”
The year of Cobain’s graduation was also
the year the Board of Regents, acting on a recommendation by the student body president - Cobain - approved changing the campus name to Nevada Southern University. The campus later won autonomy from the University of Nevada, Reno and earned the title University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1968
Cobain had spent a year at UNR, but decided to come home to Las Vegas because Reno didn’t have much appeal for him - “it was sort of a hick town compared to Las Vegas.”
Cobain went on garner a master’s degree in business administration from Northwestern University. He worked for a number of Fortune 500 companies before starting his own business as a merger and acquisition specialist for mediumsized companies.
