We were having a t e r r i f i c time t o u r i ng the land and meeting with i n t e r e s t i n g people. Later that day, I t u r n e d to Riki and said, "Hey, t o d a y is C h r i s t m a s ! " Until that moment, t h i s fact had not crossed e i t h e r of our minds. People were busy going about t h e i r business, j u s t like any other day of the year. O n l y in I s r a e l ! In A m e r i c a , it w o u l d be n e a r l y i m p o s s i b l e to "forget about" C h r i s t m a s . The malls have been f e s t i v e l y decorated for at least two months. The C h r i s t m a s l i g h t s t h r o u g h o u t the n e i g h b o r h o o d . Christmas trees in nearly every window. Scores of c h i l d r e n w a i t i n g to sit in Santa's lap. C h r i s t m a s music e v e r y w h e r e you go. C h r i s t m a s is a b e a u t i f u l t i m e of y e a r . People are happy and c h e e r f u l , school is out, and a more g i v i n g s p i r i t permeates society. It is easy to understand how C h r i s t m a s could c a p t u r e the i n t e r e s t and e x c i t e m e n t of Jewish c h i l d r e n . From t h e i r point of v i e w , what's not to l i k e ? "Why can't we c e l e b r a t e C h r i s t m a s , mommy? Can I sit in Santa's lap, d a d ? " As young parents, Riki and I c o n t e m p l a t e how we w i l l one day respond to such questions and a t t e m p t to r e c o n c i l e t h e s e p o t e n t i a l dilemmas. To say, "We have H a n u k k a h , they have C h r i s t m a s , " is not s a t i s f a c t o r y . It is i m p o r t a n t for our c h i l d r e n to u n d e r s t a n d what C h r i s t m a s means to C h r i s t i a n s and what H a n u k k a h means to Jews. C h r i s t m a s is a v e r y i m p o r t a n t h o l i d a y for C h r i s t i a n s . C h r i s t m a s c e l e b r a t e s the b i r t h d a y of Jesus C h r i s t , who C h r i s t i a n s b e l i e v e was the son of God and the Messiah. H a n u k k a h is not a major h o l i d a y on the J e w i s h c a l e n d a r . A better answer might be, " C h r i s t i a n s have C h r i s t m a s ; Jews have Purim, Simchat Torah, Passover, Sukkot, Tu B'shvat, Yom Ha'atzmaut, Shavuot, Rosh Hashanah, etc." The December d i l e m m a becomes more c o m p l i c a t e d for i n t e r m a r r i ed f a m i l i e s , when the n o n - J e w i s h spouse wishes to c e l e b r a t e C h r i s t m a s in the home. Or perhaps the f a m i l y of the n o n - J e w i s h spouse i n v i t e s everyone over for C h r i s t m a s d i n n e r . S i m i l a r issues a r i s e for J e w s - b y - C h o i c e . Even though both partners in the m a r r i a g e are Jewish, one side of the f a m i l y is u s u a l l y not Jewish. How do we e x p l a i n t h i s to the c h i l d r e n ? Please join us as we search for answers together on Sunday, December ioth, from 10-.30am-TT.30am in the sanctuary. Riki Wiederhorn will lead the discussion. ~ Rabbi Jeremy W i e d e r h o r n ?
