Since I have not had the opportunity to greet all of the graduates
of the class of 1978, it is a pleasure to record in the Epilogue my congratulations
    and best wishes.
Family, friends, professors and, yes, even administrators
know and care that each of you have successfully completed your college
studies. If this caring helps you to attain "launching speed," that's
great. At the very least, it is still a warm and sincere amenity.
    Congratulations!

    Dear Graduate:
You have now completed a prescribed course of study at the University
and are receiving your well-earned degree. Congratulations! A trite
thing to tell you at this time is that you are now leaving the confines
of the University to enter the real world. For many of you, however,
you have never left the real world but have pursued your studies while
being employed and, in many cases, raising a family. As you leave the
University you undoubtedly have mixed feelings among which are those
of pride and relief. You are now embarking upon another phase in your
education which, although quite different, is no less important. You
are joining the many graduates of our institution who we hope will not
forget us and the continuing needs of the University and the young
people who enter it each year. We shall not forget you. We wish you
success in whatever undertaking you may pursue after you have left
    this campus.

As your elected student government, we have endeavored to make
1977-78 an eventful year that you will treasure in your book of
memories. At the beginning of our administration in May of 1977,
our objectives and goals were solely for the purpose of making the
University of Nevada, Las Vegas the most outstanding university
in the country and one of which you, as a graduate, could be proud.
As UNLV grows and adds new curriculum, faculty and buildings, it
will become known as one of the finest universities in the west.
We will all point with pride to our Alma Mater.

    ALPHA TAU OMEGA
    ALPHA TAU OMEGA
Alpha Tau Omega is a name well
known to this campus for fun and
    good parties, however its real
nature is known only to that select
few who pride themselves in its
membership. To outsiders, it is a
strange assortment of men who are
    better known for their individuality
    rather than some collective identity.
They know that all the riches that
they might ever possess would be
worth the scarifice of the Brotherhood
    to which they now belong.

    The Alpha Kappa Psi Business
    fraternity stands out from other
groups here at UNLV. Unique not
only because they are business as
opposed to social, but a fraternity
with women as well as men. This
year the A K Psi's rallied to win
    the 1978 Greek Week activities.
    Member John Pencikowski was
    also elected as Greek God.

Even though Kappa Alpha Psi is a
new fraternity to this campus, the
    brotherhood to which they are
    members shall always be strong.
With many called and so few
    chosen, the K A Psi's consider
themselves to have the most motivation
    and drive. Though small, the
brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi are
    striving for a prosperous future.

    KAPPA SIGMA
The Kappa Sigma Fraternity is now
striving to be the first fraternity
with a house on the newly designated
    fraternity row. The Fraternity
was active in all areas of
campus life during the 77/78 school
year. Of their 30 active brothers,
    many were involved in student
    government, and the Fraternity
    participated in intramural sports
    along with most other campus
    sponsored events. Kappa Sigma's
goal as a social fraternity, is to
    promote brotherhood and provide
its members with a well rounded
college life in conjunction with the
    Universities academic programs.

    Network provides counseling for

at the same time participating in
    many other school activities. The
DZ's are seen in all campus groups.
Not all their time is taken up in

Football Coach Tony Knap has been involved in several
exciting games. One of the most exciting games came
in the season opener as the Rebels pulled out a 15-13
victory over the University of Montana with 27 seconds
left in the game. The victory was set up by several
big plays and was capped by a 28 yard field goal by Jim
Gaetano and gave the Rebels their season opening win.
The Rebels won their second game of the season with a
35-28 victory over the Troy State Trojans. After the Rebels
had a 21-7 halftime lead, Troy State came within one point.
UNLY came back to win 35-28.
UNLV Football coach Tony Knap made his first visit
back to Boise, Idaho and was handed a 45-14 loss by
his former players. UNLV was never in the game this
week after falling behind 21-0 early in the second quarter.
But the Rebs did pull to within seven before halftime
and that was the closest they ever got. The Rebels
only two touchdowns came on a one-yard scoring run
by Brett Davis and the second by Henry Vereen with
    Jim Gaetano kicking both PAT's.
    1 5 2
UNLV exploded for 59 points and 585 yards in
total offence to hand Western Illinois a 59-29 loss
in game five of the 1977 season. Quarterbacks Greg
Van Ness and Carlton Kelly led the UNLV offence
with 347 yeards and four touchdowns. Van Ness
completed 10 of 16 passes for 74 yards and one
touchdown while the 32 year-old sophomore Kelly
was a perfect seven for 194 yards and one touchdown.
UNLV got back on the winning track when it upset eighth-ranked
Northern Arizona University 20-16 where the Rebels have only lost
once in three years. The winning touchdown came in the fourth
quarter when Henry "Varoom" Vereen caught an 87-yard pass to
move UNLV out in front 20-13.

UNLV upped its home game winning streak to 14 as they scored 31 of the last 32
games with a 26-13 victory over Weber State. Raymond Strong led the Rebel attack
with 239 yards in 23 carries and scored two of the Rebels touchdowns.
UNLV stayed close to the San Diego State Aztec for three quarters
of the game until a two touchdown outburst sealed a 31-7
San Diego victory. With the Rebels trailing 17-7 and 48 seconds
left in the game, San Diego scored two touchdowns to put the
game out of reach for UNLV.
Sao Vaefaga blocked a 43 yard field goal by Cal
State, Fullerton with 25 seconds left in the game to
give UNLV a thrilling 24-21 victory over the Titans.
A 38 yard field goal had been nullified moments
earlier when Fullerton was guilty of an illegal procedure.
The Rebels had raced out to a 21-7 lead at
halftime, but costly errors by UNLV moved Fullerton
into a tie. Jim Gaetano won the game for
UNLV with a 27 yard field goal.
UNLV's football team upped its record to 7-2 with a
victory over the University of Idaho. The Rebels set
several school records and tied several others in the
victory over Idaho. Rebel's QB Greg Van Ness set new
records for most completions and passing yardage. He
also set a record for individual offense with 404 yards
and still another with four touchdowns in a game by an
    individual.

    EDITOR'S PAGE
Well, This yearbook is finally finished. A lot of
people, like myself, felt this book might not of been
    published. Here it is.
If it wasn't for the handful of people like those
in the Information Office, the Yell, and CSUN -
as well as the support from my brothers in Alpha
Tau Omega - this book would of had no chance
    at all.
Oh, if you noticed, the series over to the right is
a pictorial illustration of how it is coming into
office here for the first time.
Actually, CSUN has their yearbook back again
and I'm really quite proud to have had the opportunity
    to work as its editor.
    Thank you Mrs. Marshall
    Graduates—
    Congratulations,
    Really.
