CALL TO ORDER Senate President Smith called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. II. ADMINISTRATION OF OATH TO THE OFFICE OF THE STUDENT SENATE FOR THE TWENTY-SIXTH SESSION BY CHIEF JUSTICE Chief Justice Steven Amend administered the oath the twenty-sixth session. III. STATE OF THE SENATE ADDRESS Senate President Patrick Smith addressed the new senate session-Encouraged the new senate to spend time in student government, the more time invested in government the more reward will be reaped back. Encouraged to spend time in the office and to please not take their task lightly. IV. ANNOUNCEMENTS STUDENT BODY VICE PRESIDENT MILLS-Congratulations to the football team for win at Homecoming and congratulations to the Homecoming court winners. Busses to game worked well again. Addressed the situation with disposal/disbursement of desks previously owned by CSUN. STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT PIDA-Addressed the situation with disposal/disbursement of desks previously owned by CSUN. Awarded spirit awards to Coach Horton and to Becky Barnard. Senate President Smith called for an unofficial roll call, roll was taken. V. BOARD AND COMMITTEE REPORT A. DIRECTOR REPORTS a. Nevada Student Affairs, DIRECTOR TURNER-Welcome and congratulation to the new senators. Closing date for the food drive was last Friday. Pleased to report have 40 teams signed up. Working to get Magic Johnson's visit on television. b. Student Services, DIRECTOR GREENHALGH-Welcome to the new senate. Needs two Senators to fill positions on board. c. Organization Board, DIRECTOR COLE-Welcome to the new senators. Is a meeting Tuesday night. Does not have a meeting next week. Basketball lottery is Tuesday night, in the O-Board meeting. Basketball tickets will be available for general students on the 13th. Allotment will be only for November games. New packs will be given for remaining games in the Spring semester. d. Office of Student Information, DIRECTOR HAGEN-Congratulations to the new senate. Congratulated Brian Saliba and help on the good job on Homecoming. Looking to make Unity Fest like the Spring Homecoming. Noon scene on Wednesday, Nov. 8 by Engineering building. Needs two senators for the E&P committee. Tailgate Saturday, with Magic Alex playing, from 11 to 1. B. BUSINESS MANAGER REPORT No report for this week. VI. PUBLIC COMMENT[in accordance with N.R.S. 241.020 (2)(c)(3)] No comment from the gallery. VII. NEW BUSINESS Motion to waive Bylaw 4 for the remainder of the day made by SENATOR FLEISCHMAN, seconded by SENATOR CARROLL. Move into a vote. Motion passes 17-1-0. SENATOR LAXAGUE opposed. A. Vote to break tie for studies seat. Motion to approve made by SENATOR FLEISCHMAN, seconded by SENATOR CARROLL. SENATOR FLEISCHMAN yielded the floor to each candidate to speak and answer questions. Leia Griffith spoke to the Senate and answered questions. Terry Moore spoke to the Senate and answered questions. Motion to divide the house and move into a roll call vote made by SENATOR FLEISCHMAN. Nomination/appointment of vacant Senate seats Education-one open seat- Motion to nominate Misty Jo Johnson and Robert Soloman to the open Education Senate seat made by SENATOR FLEISCHMAN, seconded by SENATOR KIMMET. Motion to close nominations made by SENATOR FLEISCHAMN, seconded by SENATOR LAXAGUE. SENATOR FLEISCHAMN yielded the floor to Robert Soloman to speak to the Senate to be followed by questions. Robert Soloman spoke to the Senate and answered questions. Motion to divide the house and move into a roll call vote made by SENATOR FLEISCHMAN. Move into a roll call vote. Motion to nominate Jamie Hawkins to the open Student Development seat made by SENATOR FLEISCHMAN. Motion to close nominations made by SENATOR FLEISCHMAN, seconded by SENATOR ZUREK. Move into a vote. Motion passes 14-3-1 .SENATOR LAXAGUE, CAMPBELL, AGUERO opposed. SENATOR KIMMET abstained. Motion to yield the floor for the candidates to speak and answer questions, followed by a division of the house and a roll call vote made by SENATOR AGUERO, seconded by SENATOR CARROLL. Selection of two candidates for an election of a Senate President Pro-Tempore for the 26th Senate Session to occur at the 26-02 Senate meeting. Motion to nominate Terry Moore made by SENATOR CAMPBELL, seconded by SENATOR AGUERO. Motion to nominate Shawna Campbell made by SENATOR WONG, seconded by SENATOR ANDERSON. Motion to nominate Joe Laxague made by SENATOR AGUERO, seconded by SENATOR KIMMET. Motion to nominate Terence Carroll made by SENATOR BLOCK, seconded by SENATOR FENDELL. Motion to close nominations made by SENATOR CARROLL, seconded by SENATOR MOORE. Move into a vote. Motion passes 23-0-0. Move into a vote. Motion passes 21-0-2. SENATORS FLEISCHMAN, ZUREK abstained. Emergency Motion-presented by SENATOR LAXAGUE- to select five (5) representatives for Washington D.C. and again discuss the amounts for trip. Motion to move into a committee of the whole made by SENATOR CARROLL-granted by Senate President Smith. SENATE MINUTES 26-01 / MONDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1995 Motion to move back into the meeting made by SENATOR CARROLL, seconded by SENATOR FLEISCHMAN. Motion to amend the amount not to exceed $15,000 for eleven (11) delegates made by SENATOR ANDERSON, seconded by SENATOR CARROLL. Move into a vote on the amendment. Motion passes 13-7-4. SENATORS MONACO, KIMMET, FLEISCHMAN, GRIFFITH, CAMPBELL, LAXAGUE, BLOCK opposed. SENATORS MOORE, SPANTON, WONG, TRUJILLO abstained. Motion to make an emergency line item transfer of $25,000 from line item 20 to 3 l(out of state travel expenses) made by SENATOR FLEISCHMAN, seconded by SENATOR CARROLL. Move into a vote. Motion passes 22-0-1. SENATOR WONG abstained. Motion to approve Shawna Campbell, Joe Laxague, Jeremy Aguero, Heather Anderson, Veronica Perez, Terence Carroll, Stephanie Araiza, Bryan Lawe to attend the conference in Washington D.C. made by SENATOR FLEISCHMAN, seconded by SENATOR CAMPBELL. Move into a vote. Motion passes 22-1-0. SENATOR CAMPBELL opposed. Motion to add $450.00 to the previously approved amount to expend on the NACA trip to Salty Lake City, Utah made by SENATOR FLEISCHMAN, seconded by SENATOR FENDELL. Move into a vote. Motion passes 23-0-0. VIII. OPEN DISCUSSION SENATOR KIMMETT-Votes are not and should NOT be used as personal attacks. SENATOR AGUERO-Meeting should be more positive. SENATOR PEREZ-Meetings should be more positive. Hopes freshman senators can learn to be that way. SENATOR FLEISCHMAN-Don't like spending $900.00 forcibly, hopes new Senate does not allow this to happen anymore. Questioned delegates chosen for NACA. SENATOR CARROLL-Hopes the new Senate remains strong throughout the session. SENATOR TRUJILLO-Hopes the positive attitude in the new senate remains. SENATOR LAXAGUE-Speak to the candidates personally in the race for Pro Temp. SENATOR CAMPBELL-The candidate for open seat for communications should not have felt there was a conflict of interest by working for Rebel Yell. Senators should encourage candidates that did not receive seats to run for committees. Keep a perspective about the senate meetings versus outside the meetings. SENATOR TROTTER-Keep the meeting positive and productive. SENATOR MOORE-Speak to the candidates for Pro-Tempore and make own decisions. SENATE MINUTES 26-01 / MONDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1995 Motion to temporarily allow Article VI,Section 4, subsection F of the CSUN Constitution to be used by the Executive Board until November 12 made by SENATOR FLEISCHMAN, seconded by SENATOR TRUJILLO. Move into a vote. Motion passes 23-0-0. SENATOR TOLBERT-Thanks for people that attended Day of Dedication. STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT PIDA-Speak to people previously in the Senate as well as the candidates for the Pro-Tempore position.. Learn from this experience, and don't be afraid to ask questions. SENATE PRESIDENT SMITH-There will be no excused absences. Disappointed in the turn-out for the end of the year banquet for last Senate session. Talk to your classes, and get CSUN information out.
