Alcoholic Beverage EXECUTIVES' NEWSLETTER No. 1327 - August 27,1965 -3- viewers a chance to see the high type calibre of industry executives. It was a breakthrough in showing the industry's products on television - so-called "hard liquor" at least. It should go a long way toward removing the hypocrisy surrounding the industry arid its products that still remains in some quarters. Also good for the industry was an interesting discussion between Jack Hornsby in charge of control states for Schenley Distillers, John Slavin of Scotch House, the president of the Chamber of Commerce of Las Vegas and a prominent Las Vegas attorney on the merits of drinking^ Very good public relations. Most hilarious was the show where Charles Engelbardt, who has a great talent for sketching, was asked by Miss Black to draw a sketch for the show. He drew a sketch of Jim Parlatore - held it up in front of the camera - whereupon something happened to the transformer and the station had to go off the air for the rest of the day until it could be repaired. We doubt if Jim will ever hear the end of that one. Congratulations have to go to Fred J. Pullen, Jr., head of the House of Shows, who wrote, directed and produced "The Diamond Jubilee Year". With plans all made for a trip to Europe, he suddenly found himself caught up in the Schenley spirit and went all-out to produce this truly professional show in record time. Mr. Pullen has produced industry association shows - the NLBA show in Las Vegas, the NLSA in D. C. and the NLBA show coming up in Atlantic City. In these cases the actors were industry members themselves and Mr. Pullen said he was amazed at the way they never missed a cue or a line. Working with Mr. Pullen was A1 Fontaine. In charge of lyrics and special material: Claibe Richardson; choreography and Staging: Ed Noll and musical director, Tony Cristofaro. In the cast were Norma Crawford, and Millie Slavin (Miss Schen and Miss Lee), John Boni and Tom Urich. Coinci- dentally, Millie Slavin, while no relation to John Slavin of Scotch House, is practic- ally a double for his daughter. Bob Hacha of Staging Techniques designed the panels for the show and was along to see that they were kept in good condition. It is amaz- ing the grasp of the industry Mr. Pullen has for an "outsider". The script he wrote is written in the language of one very well versed on the industry. This week the show and the mart is being shown to N. Y. distributor salesmen, Schenley employees, hotel and restaurant personnel, Schenley suppliers and tenants of 1290 Avenue of the Americas. It will then go on tour. Material for the mart and the show was sent to Las Vegas from the Concord Hotel via truck - to get there in plenty of time so that unlike the Concord the crew wouldn't have to work around the clock setting it up. One of those responsible for getting everything ship-shape was Dave Dandes of Melrose. He and others were up bright and early waiting for the truck to arrive - but no truck. They checked with the Highway Patrol after many hours had passed to see if there had been an accident or if the truck might have been hijacked, but nothing had been reported on it. It finally arrived the next day - the delay - the truck was covered with Schenley signs which all had to be taken off in order for them to go through Oklahoma - a stale and silly law. Result: more working around the clock. Yeoman work wa s done by Charlie Holder and Tony Coppini on the show and the mart. The Schenley team spirit extended throughout the company. In thanking us for his TOP award, Bill Friedberg, coordinator of all the details involved in this type of production, said that he couldn't have earned the award without the aid of his secretary, Phoebe Michaels, who was as interested in accomplishing the desired result as he was. Terry Giannico of the duplicating department also cooperated to the fullest. Congratulations to both on their great sense of responsibility.
