Letter and envelope (with stamp) from Aggie Herrick, Ogden, Utah, to Mary E. Syphus, Panaca, Nevada, dated July 20, 1894.
    Envelope addre s sed:
    Miss Mary Syphus.
    Panaca,
    Nev.
Envelope postmarked: Ogden, Jul 20 3 PM 1894 UTAH.

    July 20, 1894,
    line
    2
    Miss Mary Syphus-
    line
    3

    line
    4
    My dear Mary,
    line
    5
    It may be truth-
    line
    6
-fully said of me as it once
    line
    7
was of a girl you read about
    line
    8
"She is not dead, but sleepeth."
    line
    9
I must confess that I have
    line
    10
    been very indolent: and
    line
    11
    after performing household
    line
    12
    duties, I have somewhat
    line
    13
    neglected other duties, but
    line
    14
you will forgive me, I know,
    line
    15
    Page
    2
I was so sorry to hear of your
    line
    I
    trouble, I can sympathize
    line
    2
with you for I have endured
    line
    3
such trials my self. We have
    line
    4
    such things to meet, and
    line
    5
we must try to bear them
    line
    6
    Page 2
    with fortitude. We do not
    line 7
    wish to forget such sorrow-
    line 8
    -ful scenes, but time softens
    line 9
    and heals the wounds caused
    line 10
    by death.
    line 11
We have a loss in our
    line 12
    family this summer. On
    line 13
the first of June, our brother
    line 14
    John was married to Janie
    line 15
West. Of course she is all
    line 16
that one could desire in a
    line 17
sister but it was hard to be
    line 18
reconciled to the fact of losing
    line 19
our brother. It took us a
    line 20
    long time to become used
    line 21
to the change. Of course we
    line 22
miss him now but not nearly
    line 23
    Page 3
as much as we did at first.
    line 1
    During this month we
    line 2
    have had quite an excitement
    line 3
    over the strike, but everything
    line 4
    has been comparitively quiet
    line 5
    since the troops were station-
    line 6
-ed here. This week an attempt
    line 7
was made to tear up the
    line 8
    railway track just out of
    line 9
    town but the wreckers were
    line 10
arrested in the act and I
    Page 3 line 11
    suppose they will receive
    line 12
    their reward. Sunday morning
    line 13
July 8, we had an awful
    line 14
fire and a plan was made
    line 15
    to burn the town, there
    line 16
    were seven fires started at
    line 17
    once and fuses were found
    line 18
    in many of the largest
    line 19
    business houses in town.
    line 20
    We escaped such a calamity,
    line 21
but the loss to different firms
    line 22
reached away up in the thousands.
    line 23
    Page 4
    Last Wednesday afternoon
    line 1
    we experienced a slight
    line 2
    earthquake shock. No damage
    line 3
was done, but a great many
    line 4
    people were very much frighten
    line 5
    -ed. Such things make one
    line 6
think that it is about time
    line 7
to live a better life. They arouse
    line 8
    quite serious thoughts in
    line 9
    my mind.
    line 10
    Well, Miss Findlay has
    line 11
    returned to Ogden. I inquired
    line 12
of you when she called on
    line 13
    Page 4
me, but she said she had line 14 not see you. I have been line 15 wondering if there is n't a line 16 stronger attachment in Ogden line 17 than mere friendly relations. line 18
Well, it is nearly dinner line 19 time so I must close, All line 20 join me in sending love to you. line 21 Write as soon as you can. line 22
    Lovingly Yours Aggie line 23
