room .witha view Guests at the Desert Irm are now being rewarded with a new visual and environmental delight as the plush resort hotel recently completed a $500,000 room redecoration program in two of its sections. The firms selected to create this new atmosphere were the internationally renowned interior decorators Paul Laszlo and Associates of Beverly Hills, and Jinx Dobbins, Interiors Unlimited of Houston, Texas. Contrary to usual practice, it was decided that all rooms and suites should not have an identical mass produced appearance. As a result there are several styles of custom designed furniture including international and contemporary design. Finish colors are also varied among the styles which are interspersed in the refurbished area. Coordinated colors in the fabrics, carpets and wall coverings suggest home comfort rather than a commercial interior. Among the new improvements added to the rooms was a privacy screen at the entrance covered with Tai Cane ?╟÷ a new process which looks like caning but is actually made of a thermoplastic material. A new vinyl base was placed around all walls and steps. New closet poles were installed along with new door privacy locks. The bathrooms were repapered in a soft gold or white vinyl lattice effect on ceilings and walls. All windows were draped using a sheet casement and an over drape with black-out lining, thus providing maximum control for light and privacy. All lighting is on reistate switches and is controlled from the entrance or at individual switches. New beds were installed to provide extra width and length. Bedspreads are of heavy quilted fabrics. The carpeting used is of the finest quality top sheared wool. Thus far, some 160 rooms and suites have undergone the extensive renovation program. The Desert Inn has scheduled another 250 for refurbishment later this year. as apparelfor *fflomen ?½nly The DI Distinctive Apparel features a two-piece Dacron pique slack suit with peek-a-boo insets of cotton lace designed by Connie Unger. Our jumbo shrimp are a close approximation. For 4 people, use 2 pounds of scampi or jumbo shrimp. Cut them lengthwise without removing the shells, leaving one point on the convex side joined. Flatten them out. Skewer each one with a wooden toothpick if desired to hold them flat. Baste them with olive oil and season them with salt and pepper. Grill under a hot broiler, first the cut side and then the shell side. This will take 6-8 minutes, depending on their size. Serve them on a hot dish, sprinkled with minced parsley, olive oil and lemon juice. B
