Dear Tom: C* w B E U .R r,v_T r ,.0 m 1611 During my brief visit with you last week in Las Vegas I made mention of the proposed cooperative ground-water study that I hope can be started during J u n e . I have briefly discussed this proposed study with Mr. Montgomery and he agrees with me that it is extremely important that we make further evaluation of the ground-water resources of the valley. There are a number of unknown quantities which should certainly be determined at the earliest possible time in order that we can best operate the basin. The study by Maxey, which was reported in Water Resources Bulletin #5, was of a preliminary nature insofar as he had very little data upon which to work. During his study he gathered a great deal of information relative to the valley and since that time, as you know, we have been continuously gathering further data. With this in back of us, the ground-water geologist whom we hope to have work in that area will have a great deal to go on and can concentrate his studies in such a manner as to determine the essential things we want to know. The proposed program will be a cooperative one with the United States Geological Survey, Ground-Water Division, and I am in­formed from Washington that they have a man they can place in the field. The exact cost of the program has not as yet been worked out but should* not exceed $8,000 a year, half of which will be contributed by the Geological Survey. At a recent meeting with the Colorado River Commission of Nevada they agreed to furnish $2,000 for the first year on the assump­tion that the District would furnish a like amount. I realize that at the moment you do not have any funds on hand but I hope that the Board of Directors will make some indication as to whether or not the District would participate. If the District does indicate that they can participate I will go ahead and make arrangements to start the program as quickly as possible. I think at the start of the program it would be advisable to hold a meeting so that we could all be in agreement as to the objectives.
