Following the Service: Kiddush in the Entratter Social Hall MAY & JUNE 1994 THE BULLETIN PAGE 3 REFLECTIONS m m m By RABBI EARL S. KIDECKEL Every so often it happens - you are called to the Torah for an aliyah. It could be at a bar mitzvah, or on Saturday morning when you attend services. You walk up to the bimah and you recite the beracha (blessing). You finish the honor and turn towards the others standing beside you. What do you say? They turn to you and say "yashar ko-ach". What should your response be? First of all, you have to understand what has just been said to you before you can respond. The word ko-ach is Hebrew word. It means strength. "Yashai" means straight. Literally, the phrase means may your strength be straight. They are really expressing the fact that just as you have completed this mitzvah, may your strength remain straight so that you will continue to be able to perform another mitzvah in strength, and that your frame of mind will be strengthened to perform another mitzvah. Anytime an individual performs a mitzvah, from having an aliyah at the Torah to giving tzedakah, the correct phrase one says to the participant is "yashar ko-ach Now that we understand the phrase said to us, how do we respond? We could say "thank you" or "todah rabah." However, Jewish tradition believes that when one wishes another well, we should use that opportunity to wish the same to the one who says "yashar ko-ach." It is, therefore, customary to respond "baruch te-hee-yeh." The word "baruch" means blessed." "Te-hee-eh" means "shall you be." In other words you respond "so shall you be blessed, as you have blessed me, with the strength that is straight and will lead you to perform many mitzvot." The next time you walk up to the Torah you will now know what to say. The next time someone does a mitzvah, you will know what to say: "yashar ko-ach." The response is "baruch te-hee-yeh." Mazal tov, you have now learned the proper etiquette of acknowledging a mitzvah. I hope that you will join us for services in observance of the receiving of the Torah at Mt. Sinai during the festival of Shavuot. Lisa, Stacey, Cory and I wish you a chag same-ach. A Rabbinic Note: 1) The first night of Rosh Hashanah this year takes place on the Monday night of Labor Day Weekend. Please take note of this fact in making your weekend plans. 2) Primary elections will be held here in the State of Nevada on the first day of Rosh Hashanah. As an American, you are entitled to vote. As a Jew, it is an obligation to be in synagogue and observe the holiday."The Board of Elections will be holding absentee balloting. Please make every effort to vote early. NOTES FROM THE CANTOR By CANTOR SIMON BERGMAN A TRUE SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE A Bar or Bat Mitzvah is truly a joyous celebration. It means a young person has grown spiritually and learned enough about Torah and our Jewish Heritage to be responsible for his or her own religious acts. That makes one truly a son or daughter of the Commandments. The basic part of the ceremony is the fact that the youngster is called to the Torah to recite the proper blessings. It is a sign of acceptance as an adult in Jewish worship. Going up to the Torah is therefore a pledge that all of us make, to always take part in Jewish religious life. Here at Temple Beth Shalom, we are extremely proud of our B'nai Mitzvah (our Bar and Bat Mitzvah youngsters), for their outstanding performances both collectively and individually. There is something special for each student, when they ascend the Bimah to participate in our service. I'm sure this experience sets the tone for their future involvement in our Jewish religious life both here in Las Vegas and wherever they go as they continue their college studies. I know that the Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony has a beautiful beginning and a wonderful ending. When the service ends, their Jewish life continues and should be even more meaningful. I take personal pride in working with each and everyone of them. I cannot begin to express the wonderful feeling I have in seeing each of my students reach this milestone, not only in their lives, but in the lives of their parents and grandparents as well. May we all be blessed to continue to enjoy the wonderful life cycles of our Jewish Heritage here at Temple Beth Sholom for many years to come. Cantor Simon Bergman E.S.P. Service The E.S.P. MAY & JUNE 1994 THE BULLETIN PAGE 5 EDYTHE KATZ HONORED AT THE CRYSTAL BALL DINNER DANCE The Board of Directors of Temple Beth Sholom is proud to announce that it will honor Edythe Katz at The Crystal Ball, a dinner dance June 12, to be held at the Sheraton Desert Inn Country Club. A long-time resident of Las Vegas, Katz will be honored for her life of distinguished service to the Temple, the community and the state of Nevada. Among her many accomplishments, Edythe Katz was the chairperson of the first fund-raiser in 1955, to build the Temple. Katz said, "We called it The Jewish Community center in those days. Our first function was a melodrama at the Silver Slipper Ballroom. We had the most wonderful time and the whole community participated." Edythe's involvement in Temple Beth Sholom for over 40 years has been extensive, she has served on hundreds of boards and committees. She is responsible for a legion of organizations that have improved the quality of life in Las Vegas and Nevada. For her tireless efforts in Holocaust education, she was appointed by Governor Bob Miller as chairperson of the Governor's Advisory Council in Education Relating to the Holocaust. In 1992, The Edythe and Lloyd Katz Elementary school was dedicated. The Crystal Ball is co-chaired by Sandy Mallin and Arlene Blut. "We are going to offer our guests the most wonderful evening of surprises in addition to a silent auction, a special raffle and wonderful entertainment from Los Angeles," said Mallin. Marilyn and Randy Tichauer of Rodeo Drive Productions will take us on a musical journey to the Paris Opera House with highlights from Phantom of the Opera. Backed by their orchestra, Rodeo Drive always promises to captivate their audience. For ad book or reservation information, please call the Temple Beth Sholom Executive Director, Isabel J. Goldberg, 384-5070. EDYTHE KATZ PAGE 6 THE BULLETIN MAY & JUNE 1994 SPOTLIGHT ON SISTERHOOD By FRAN LEVIEN, PRESIDENT Our Election Dinner meeting was great. We had a delicious dinner and above all, great camaraderie existed for all those present. It was nice having the men join us for this joyous occasion. As my third term comes to an end, I'd like to tell you about some of the things we accomplished this past year. Our kitchen gals did kiddushim, both small and large. We also started baking cakes for the Oneg Shabbats, to keep the cost down. The Gift shop did extremely well due to new merchandise, good planning and our Chanukah Bazaar. We sold out of menorahs, dreidels and all the Chanukah merchandise in general. It would really be nice if our own Temple members were more supportive. At the very least, they could purchase scrip. We all have to eat, clean, etc. Membership Teas brought us new members. Torah Fund was a financial success. Our Shabbaton weekend was a tribute to our members, many taking parts both Friday and Saturday, from age 7 to ??? Our contribution of $10,000 to paint and refurbish the school rooms was due to hard work at our many fund raisers. The Wine and Cheese evening was both a social and financial success. Our newest addition is our own computer, to be housed here in the Temple for the exclusive use of Sisterhood. As usual, we will be giving our yearly contribution of $10,000 to the Temple at the annual Temple meeting. We are still hoping to one day be able to say we have our new kitchen. The funds we have collected for the kitchen remain designated for the explicit use of funding the new kitchen. You still have time to get your donor credit. Our year will conclude with two events. The first will be our Donor Luncheon on June 2, 1994 at the Las Vegas Country Club. Lil Kronberg is chairing this event. If you have any questions regarding your credit, please call Jackie Boiman at 384-5070 or 459-7769. If you have earned your donor credit, you will be invited to attend as our guest. Reservations are a must. Our second event for June is our Rummage Sale, to be held at the Temple on June 5, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Any questions, please call Fern Kaye at 227-6321, Adele Glatt at 457-8796 or me at 382-8908. Nothing could have been accomplished without the help of each and every one of you. Several of us attended the Women's League Conference. I'm sure we were all very inspired and look forward to making 1994-1995 a great year. In closing, I'd like to say that it was indeed a pleasure and privilege to serve as Sisterhood president. The job, although sometimes difficult, was always a most rewarding experience. Our Sisterhood is truly blessed with a core of intelligent, generous and selfless women who are always ready to lend a hand, to do any job and to offer endless support. I'd like to thank my husband Len for his constant support and help during the past three years. And now, as of July, we will have a new president, Kathy Brookhart. I wish her, her new Board and the entire membership a most successful and rewarding year. Len joins me in wishing you a wonderful Mother's Day, Father's Day and a great, happy and safe summer to you and yours. Shalom, FRAN CONGREGATIONAL UPDATE Edward M. Bernstein, President I wanted to update the congregation on the progress of our search for a new location of our Temple. Over the last sixty days our committee has met with various representatives from development groups from the east and west sides of town in which we have been accumulating information regarding opportunities for our Temple to relocate. Although the Board of Directors has voted to move the Temple, this process of locating a suitable site as well as funding the construction and the actual building of the Temple could take several years. It is important however, to commence today the planning of our future tomorrow. I will continue to keep you informed. Our graduating class has grown /jk^Sf both physically and intellectually. The older children liaJv&k. are now confident and ready to begin their next step vZJ to independence in a preschool setting. The younger ^ children will return next season to continue their Mommy and Me experience. It has been an exciting and enjoyable year for all of us involved in the Mommy and Me programs. We all look forward to next year and the experiences it will bring. May was a fun-filled month for our young students and their parents. We made Mother's Day gifts as well as wrapping paper and cards. The children made sun visors and we all had a great time blowing bubbles. Flags were designed for Israel's 46th birthday celebration and we even prepared Father's Day gifts in advance of the special day. The children are now getting ready for the Commencement Day activities. Our little graduates will receive traditional caps and diplomas, and awards as well on Friday, June 3rd at 5:15 PM followed by the E.S.P. service. In September we will begin our fall semester of Mommy and Me. If you have a child who will be 12 months of age by September 1st and not yet 30 months, come and join the fun in our classes. It is truly an experience you won't want to miss. There is already a waiting list and each class is limited to 10 youngsters. TEMPLE BETH SHOLOM PRE-SCHOOL & SOLOMON SCHECHTER DAY SCHOOL By MICHAEL KOSE, DIRECTOR As the school year winds down, we can review this past year's achievements with great pride. Our pre-school, as always, has maintained its extremely fine standards that have given it a stellar reputation throughout the Las Vegas community. Our staff, many of whom have given us long years of service, is extremely dedicated, experienced and nurturing. They represent the very best in pre-school education and day care that this city has to offer. The newly named Solomon Schechter Day School of Las Vegas has emerged full circle out of the tough growing pains of the first two years. We have finally arrived, I feel, to the point where the school is operating on a very smooth and desirable basis. Teachers in all grades and subject areas are very strong and dedicated on all fronts, and would represent a most capable teaching unit anywhere in the United States. The atmosphere of the school is warm and inviting and the children have a sense of purpose and joy as they go about their daily pursuit of our enriched Judaic and secular curriculum. All those who are connected to our schools can optimistically look to a future that will hold only success and growth. As I have constantly emphasized: the strength of any institution or team lies mainly within the strength of its personnel. In this respect, we may hold our heads high, for we have the very best! On Wednesday, May 4th, a Spring Program will be presented in the Entratter Social Hall of Temple Beth Sholom. The pre-school dance class, taught by Mrs. Toni Sgarlata, will present a short dance recital. The pre-school, assisted by the students of the first and second grades, will then present an operetta,"GARUSH". This is the story of the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492, written for the school by Martha Olsen. The program will begin at 10:00 AM and everyone is cordially invited to attend. Please look into our Kinder Kamp 4 Kids Day Camp for your pre-school age child for the summer months. We will have the same outstanding pre-school staff that taught during the school year and facilities available for this wonderful experience. Please direct all of your inquiries to the school office. Have a Wonderful and Healthy Summer!! BOIMAN Wow can't believe that our KADIMA year is conning to an end. But we don't stop here. We will have fun over the summer and then start our membership drive in August. KADIMA sure had a great time at Omnimax. We got to see Antarctica. Everyone loved the funny penguins. Boogies was great too. Why were people staring at us through the window. Say, do you know what the hottest show in Vegas was on Saturday, April 30th. Not Sigfried and Roy, ...Not David Copperfield, ...Not Boxing, it was our own KADIMA PLAYERS!!! The reviews are in and the critics all agree that EMOR was a smashing success. It may even be up for a Tony. Well would you believe a Bob?? KADIMA KINNUS was the highlight of our year. A weekend of fun for approximately 300 KADIMAniks from the whole Far West Region. In our next issue of the bulletin I will tell you all about it. Birthday greetings go out to the following: COLIN OPPENHEIM, DAVID SCULLY, MATTHEW GOLDBERG, MELODY ROCK, MAXWELL BERKLEY, DAVID GORDON, AMBER DUNN, BRIAN STARKER, TYLER ROSS, ELIAHU MARTEL, RACHEL WAX, JOSHUA POMERANTZ, MICHAEL GREEN, ZOE LEY, ETHAN SOMMER, NICOLE BRODSKY, JASON SARFATY, JESSICA DARKONSKY, NICOLE KLAFTER-PHILLIPS, ARON PONZIO, ZACHARY SILVER, DANA POMERANTZ and CHANA KERNER. Just a few reminders... In May we will be having our last lounge night on Wednesday, May 25th. It will be a Talent show and we will be giving out 6th grade graduation certificates. So on the 25th, come with your talent, and your Kleenex as we bid farewell to our 6th graders and wish them a wonderful time in Jr. USY next year. But wait, just because it is our last lounge night, doesn't mean that we aren't going to have fun after that. The only difference is that you will have to keep an eye on your mail box for further details. I will tell you that we will be going to Wet 'n Wild on Sunday, June 5th, and that we will also go to two Stars games. One on July 3rd with fireworks and all, and the other on July 26th when we will have a contest to see who can find the most Elvi. Enough, watch your mail. Before I end my last article for the season, I would like to thank a few people. First off I would like to thank the Youth Commission for always backing KADIMA up. The various individuals who have made what I affectionately call "Child Support" donations. Their checks have always been in the mail. The many parents who have driven our KADIMAniks to all of our events. Our Professional KADIMA staff who have made all of our activities just a bit more fun because of who they are. Creative Impact for donating all of our monthly flyers. Temple Beth Sholom for extending their facilities and I do mean all of their facilities to us when needed. The maintenance staff for NATE MACK RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Toby Rosenbush, Education Director This month brings the completion of another school year, and what a wonderful school year it has been. Starting with the High Holidays and going through the Jewish calendar to the holiday of Shavuot, our school days have been rich with wonderful, creative Jewish experiences. Our Religious School is dedicated to Jewish excellence and through a very fine Creative Arts program, intensive Hebrew language and reading program, ethical values and traditions, and special family workshops, we hope to achieve our goal of producing loyal, devoted and educated Jews of the future. Our academic year will culminate in a beautiful and impressive seventh grade Hebrew School graduation, to be held on the eve of Shavuot and, one week after that, on Sunday, May 22nd, closing exercises will be held. Some of the children who have recently been selected as Students of the Month are: AARON KLAFTER-PHILLIPS, ALEX MEMAR, ERIN KAPLOWITZ, TABITHA STAKES, LAUREN MOLASKY, JULIE SHLISKY, SAM SROKA, FARRAH KAYE and JUSTIN SEXNER. We look forward to a great new year of Religious School activities. Temple Beth Sholom's Nate Mack Religious School is the only place for your child to receive the best Jewish education there is, and the place where "kids love to leam". It is also the only Religious School in Las Vegas affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. On behalf of our entire faculty, I wish you all a happy and healthy summer. See you in the fall!! Shalom. always having the youth lounge spotless for our meetings. And especially our KADIMAniks. You guys (and gals) are the finest bunch of young adults a group could ever hope for. You continue to amaze me with your enthusiasm, eagerness, helpfulness, and make it all worth while for me to perform my job. Have a marvelous summer, I will be here at the Synagogue if you need to chat, look high and low for some fellow 3rd (cause in September they will be 4th) graders as well as 4th and 5th graders. Let's make KADIMA the greatest in 94/95. HEY KADIMANIKS HOW DO YOU FEEL? MAY & JUNE 1994 THE BULLETIN PAGE 9 By Lois Bergman, Camp Director This summer promises to be an exciting adventure for the children who attend our Kibbutz Shalom experience. We are innovating totally new concepts for our camp program. Beginning with our great new tee shirts and our camp newspaper we will be creating opportunities for fun times and growing experiences within a Jewish oriented environment. The entire camp will be involved in the preparation of a Shabbat dinner with all of the trimmings. We will have varied and unusual field trips, such as the one to Lake Mead Recreation area. The children will grow and maintain a garden and do community sen/ice projects. There will be puppet shows and we will be making our own epic movie on sound stage Shalom. Maccabean games (color wars) will be an important part of the Kibbutz Shalom fun. We will also be making a stained glass project and exploring our Jewish identity through dance, song and story. Camp Shalom programs are based upon the needs of our children to experience and explore themselves, others, their environment and their Jewish heritage. To meet these needs, each child will have a voice in charting their own summer adventures. At camp we are concerned with developing within each child a sense of responsibility for their own actions and commitment to Judaism. Our staff looks top rate this summer so what better place is there than our Day Camp, under the guidance of our qualified personnel! ifou fit Camp fhatotH SHABBAT DINNER AND SERVICES UNDER THE STARS On Friday, May 13th, Temple Beth Sholom will host a Shabbat Dinner at 6:30 PM, in the Entratter Social Hall. BERNSTEIN Recently, Nancy and I attended a leadership convention in Sundance, Utah presented by Stephen Covey called "Principle Centered Leadership Week". Stephen Covey is today known as perhaps the most popular and knowledgeable management consultant and author known internationally. He has worked with over 200 of the Fortune 500 companies. He has also worked for foreign governments around the world. Mr. Covey is a religious Mormon and believes fundamentally that the principles taught in the Judaic-Christian religions are the same principles that companies should be using to succeed in a business and management. The week consisted of five days of arduous work and perhaps the most revealing to me was our exercise in developing a personal mission statement. Covey thinks that it is important for each of us to have a personal mission statement. What we stand for, who are we, and where we are going. We all have different roles in our life.
