CEREMONY PARTICIPANTS
COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER
John C. Unrue
Dr. John Unrue came to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in 1970 after completing a Ph.D. in English at The Ohio State University. He has served in nearly every level of administration at UNLV. From 1973-1975 he chaired the Department of English; from 1975-1977 he was Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Letters; from 1977-1983 he served as Dean of the College of Arts and Letters, and from 1983 to 1994 he served as Academic Vice President and Senior Vice President and Provost, longer than any other administrator to hold that post. During his years as Provost, UNLV experienced its most dramatic academic development, adding seven new undergraduate degree programs, ten new masters programs, and nine new Ph.D. programs. Also during his term as Provost, UNLV added new colleges of Engineering, Human Performance and Development, and Fine and Performing Arts as well as new Schools of Architecture, Communication Studies, and Social Work and hired during his eleven-year term approximately three hundred fifty faculty members. Dr. Unrue has been a consistently strong supporter of the liberal arts, providing resources for them, and defending academic freedom so essential to their development and so vital to the mission of all colleges and universities. As an administrator, Dr. Unrue never lost touch with the faculty, and he has stated repeatedly and acted upon his belief that the strength of any academic program and any institution rests solely upon the quality and strength of its faculty. He looks forward to full-time teaching in the Department of English in the fall of 1995, where he has taught a wide variety of courses in medieval English literature and modern American literature. He has been married to Dr. Darlene Unrue, Professor of English, for thirty-five years. They have two children, Greg and Jane, a daughter-in-law, Shizuko Ebina, and a son-in-law, Kevin J. O’Connor.
