J COPY I October 8, 1948 Mr. George I. Ashby, President Union pacific Railroad Company Omaha,- Nebraska. Dear Mr, Ashby: You no doubt have been advised of the intent to create a Hater District for the Las Vegas Valley, and being in close touch with the water situation in the Valley can appreciate the. need for additional water if the City and Valley are to continue to grow. On the 19th of this month an election will be held approving the District and electing Directors who will formulate plans for the District. To supplement the supply to Las Vegas proper and get water to the strip and the Valley, water will have to be brought in from Lake Meade, and this is going to take time and money. Although we do favor the District, th©/Commissioners and myself feel that the City of Las Vegas should protect itself to the extent that water now being produced within the City of Las Vegas can be confined for the use of the City and the extension of lines within the City. If a District is created and water now being produced in the City could be distributed to points outside the City, it would soon deplete the supply within the City and create a.situation we cannot allow to happen. With-the information I have submitted __above, do you have any suggestions as to what action the Cijyy should take.
