Las Vegas - April 10, 1945 W 18-1-12-A Mr. Frank Strong: Your letter April 2, File 1-7334. We are of course cognizant of the presence of the structures on the Ranch, ease of 5th Street. These are the cabins surrounding the swimming pool and were built there, if I remember correctly, during the Doo- little lease in 1918. They were under sublease from about 1933 to Roy Gates, Senator Pittman's brother-in- law, but were eventually purchased by Will Stewart, present leasee of the Ranch and included in the Ranch premises. However, in view of the lease provision to which you refer, probably the best thing to do is for me to arrange with General Attorney McNamee to draw up a rider for the lease, stating that the presence of these cabins on the premises (as well as the bungalow near spring east of 5th Street) will not be considered in violation of Section 6 of the lease. I am asking Mr. McNamee to prepare such a rider. During the heavy influx of war workers to this territory a few years ago, we noticed a number of shacks and trailers grouped around the spring east of the road. We arranged with Mr. Stewart for their removal to avoid any possibility of their acquiring squatter's rights, and also placed a lid and lock on the spring box to prevent unauthorized use of the water. Since the bungalow has been constructed there we have had no further trouble with trespassers and inasmuch as our title to land is acknowledged by payment of rental to lessee, the arrangement is not objectionable but rather beneficial to us. WALTER R. BRACKEN cc: Mr. L. A. McNamee Please prepare rider, per our conference yesterday.
