    COPY October 8 , 1948 Mr. George F. Ashby, President U n i o n pacific Railroad Company O m a h a , Nebraska. Dear Mr. Ashby: Y o u no doubt have been advised of the intent to create a W a t e r Distr i c t f o r the Las Vegas Valley, and being in close touch w i t h the water situation in the Valle can appreciate the need for additional wa t e r if the City and Valley are to continue to grow. On the 19th of this m o n t h a n election will be held a p p r o v i n g the District and elec t i n g Directors who w i l l formulate plans for the District* To supplement the supply to Las Vegas proper and get water to the strip and the Valley, wa t e r will have to be brought in f r o m Lake Meade, and this is g o i n g to take time and money. A l t h o u g h we do favor the District, t h © / C o m m i s s ioners a n d m y s e l f feel that the City of Las Vegas should protect itself to the extent that water n o w being produced w i t h i n the City of Las Vegas can be confined for the use of the City and the extension of lines w i t h in the City. If a District is created a n d water now b e i n g produced in the City could be distributed to points outside the City, it w o u l d soon deplete the supply w i t h i n the City and create a situation we cannot a l l o w to hpppen. Withethe in f o r m a t i o n I have submitted above, do you have any suggestions as to what action the Ci$y should take. Vie understand that there will be no supplemental supply of water from the H e n d e r s o n supply. W i t h kind personal regards, I.am, Sincerely, E« W. Cragin, Mayor. cc:R*A*Blonde. (sgd) S.W.C.
