An annual af-fair, the festivities have been out-lined by a select committee appointed by President Gecrge. In presenting the program, Presi-dent George on behalf of the members extends a most hearty greeting to the "guests" for today and hope that each enjoys the fellowship that is the watchword of Las Vegas Rotarians. The program, arranged by the com-mittee of which Allen Bunker is chair-man, will include a Christmas message by the Rev. Walt Hanne, Christmas songs by a high school chorus direct-ed by Mrs. Marjorie Dickinson, and the presentation of gifts to the Rotaryanns. Presiding will be Allen Bunker. Two separate drawings are sched-uled today; the usual in which the winner will be a Rotaryann and the special Turkey award in which a 2f> lb. "torn", donated by Jack Wollen-zien will be presented to the holder of the lucky number. Proceeds from the turkey award will be sent to the Las Vegas division of the Salvation Army to assit that group in carrying out its Christmas charities. •><- -x- ->{• -JS- ">c % -s- -x- -;<• -8- # NEXT WEEK Club members are in for a special treat next week when Chet Lauck (Lum of the famed comedy team of Lum and Abner) speaks. Lauck recently re-turned from Yugoslavia where he spent'"- three months shooting scenes for a series of TV shorts to be released soon While in the European coun-try, Lauck had a good chance to study the methods and practices of Commun-ists, and he is expected to devote much of his talk around that subject.-^. Program chairman will be Dud Lauck, a Las Vegas Rotarian and brother of the entertainer. -if- -x -K- * * •};• • LAST WEEK ^ Members of the Las Vegas high\_^-' school football team, coaches and school officials were the honored Uy6 guests at last week's meeting and l^jj^ heard a very entertaining speech by~2£ Braven Dyer, nationally known sports^ writer. The Wildcats, Nevada highschool t champions for the second consecutive year, were introduced individually ^ by their mentor, Coach Angelo Collis.® Dyer, a veteran member of the Los Angeles Times staff, told of many interesting experiences which he had noted in his years of sports writing, and delivered a message to the "champs" in which he urged the young players to "always act like champions—your best at all times." In passing, Dyer gave out a few "tips" on the Rose Bowl game and said that the Buckeyes had to be favored, "the Trojans definitely have a chance, particularly if the injured players respond to treatment £ id get into the Game." irman was Ray Gerar WHEEL OF ROTARY Page Three HERE AND THERE President George again reminds members of the planned inter-club visit on January 27th, when a group of Las Vegas Rotarians journey to Bakersfield for a joint meeting with the club in that city. George says it is planned to charter a plane for the trip enabling the members to make the jaunt in one day. Added details will be announced later. Trap shooters in the club have sent word that they are wondering what has happened to the members of the committee named a short time ago to arrange for a club trap shoot. In case the members have forgotten their assignments, President George lists the group as including Chair-man Bob Russell, James Cashman, Sr., Ed Fountain and Cliff Leonard. Orchids to Bob Cannon who re-tires as program chairman next week after serving for the past three months. Bob has presented a series of outstanding programs and his ser-vices are deeply appreciated. % * * -x- * -;;- # -z * -x- ABSENTEES: MADE UP; BAK BAKER - Boulder City DICK MOSS " Felix Allen, Ed Borsack, Dan Crane, Jim Cashman, Jr., Joe Conroy, Ray Cullgy, Ernie Cragin, Kel Houssels, Jim Irwin, Allye Lawson, Paul Mc- Dermott, Dail Phelps, Bob Russell, Bill Ruymann. Last week we had 13 visiting Ro-rians at our meeting. WHO'S WHO Born of Dutch ancestry several hundred years ago, in the north coun-try millions of miles beyond the North Star. Our personage today had little or no formal education but at an early age showed a flair for car-pentry and a talent for creating toys out of thin air Subsequently, he went into business for himself and it was not long before his North Star Novelty Company was swamped with or-ders. To keep up with the demand and supply the orders on time, he acquir-ed a number of small apprentices whose only qualifications had to be busy fingers and the ability to keep young forever. They also showed no hesita-tion in working long hours sans the time and one-half for over i|0 hours. Distribution of his products be-came such an acute problem that he added a delivery truck pulled by a special breed of reindeer who are the only species known capable of defying the law of gravity. At various times during his long and illustrious car-eer, false rumors were spread by pro-paganda agents that he no longer lived. Rotary Wheel readers, however, are warned to disregard such reports and to reaffirm their faith by dis-cussing the problem with the nearest child at hand. Members of the Wheel staff have it on good authority that this illus-trious gent has discovered the much sought-after everlasting life. As long as someone believes in him, he will be a visitor as usual tomorrow night, spreading his good cheer.... His name?
