0 ^ / — , / t y J o LAS VEGAS VALLEY Water Firm to be Called Upon to Explain Shortage The Las Vegas Land and Wa­ter company will be called upon to explain why it is-not fu r nish-ing sufficient water to meet the needs of the Las Vegas area at a meeting to be held next Mon­day morning at 9 o’clock, City Manager Chet Shelly said this morning, Charles Williams, member of the Nevada public service com­mission, will conduct the investi­gation in the meeting to which the city commission and repre­sentatives of the water company have been invited. “ The water company has a franchise to serve this area and it's high time somebody found out Why they’re not doing so satisfactorily,” Shelly explained. “ The city feels it has respons­ibility in this matter and the commission is determined to get some action which will prevent future water shortages of the. kind that this summer are wreaking so much havoc with the beautiful lawns of the com­munity,” Shelly commented. Williams made a complete in­vestigation in Las Vegas a year ago when the situation reached emergency proportions. As a re­sult of his report, the public service commission subsequent­ly held a hearing here, similar to the one scheduled for next Monday. At this hearing rep­resentatives'' of the water corn-pay assured the irate users that preparations were already under way to provide an ample supply for 1950. ! Shelly declared today that the city board was in no mood to 'Sit; idly toy and see another and perhaps more critical shortage develop in- 1951. “ We’ve listened to excuses; and alibis ^long enough/’; he said. ‘‘We’re going to have plen­ty of water to carry us through next year and the years that follow or know the reason why. Bob Cooper, director of traffic at the police department* re­ported that he had only received one call yesterday, and that con­cerned water wastage. Both Cooper and Shelley said that t e e special water officers! are checking only on water wast-age and coolers without pumps.
