0 ^ / — , / t y J o LAS VEGAS VALLEY Water Firm to be Called Upon to Explain Shortage The Las Vegas Land and Water company will be called upon to explain why it is-not fu r nish-ing sufficient water to meet the needs of the Las Vegas area at a meeting to be held next Monday morning at 9 o’clock, City Manager Chet Shelly said this morning, Charles Williams, member of the Nevada public service commission, will conduct the investigation in the meeting to which the city commission and representatives of the water company have been invited. “ The water company has a franchise to serve this area and it's high time somebody found out Why they’re not doing so satisfactorily,” Shelly explained. “ The city feels it has responsibility in this matter and the commission is determined to get some action which will prevent future water shortages of the. kind that this summer are wreaking so much havoc with the beautiful lawns of the community,” Shelly commented. Williams made a complete investigation in Las Vegas a year ago when the situation reached emergency proportions. As a result of his report, the public service commission subsequently held a hearing here, similar to the one scheduled for next Monday. At this hearing representatives'' of the water corn-pay assured the irate users that preparations were already under way to provide an ample supply for 1950. ! Shelly declared today that the city board was in no mood to 'Sit; idly toy and see another and perhaps more critical shortage develop in- 1951. “ We’ve listened to excuses; and alibis ^long enough/’; he said. ‘‘We’re going to have plenty of water to carry us through next year and the years that follow or know the reason why. The eity has definitely assumed that responsibility and will see it through.” L A S V E G A S , N E V A D A Vegas Residents Praised for Conserving Water; Las; Vegas residents came in 1 for a little praise today when \ pity .officials pointed out that the ! recent lifting of water use restrictions evidently is working , iout, t® the best interests,of everyr , 'one concerned. j. At the same time, officials e x -; plained that the past five days j may not have been a true test, of the water situation because | | of recent storms that cut down : lawn watering to a great degree. In any case,' a sample of residents throughout the. city reported that water pressure to/ their homes seemed to be “ good.” k City Manager Chet Shelley | said that phope calls complain-jing of water shortage had j stopped coming into his office. Bob Cooper, director of traffic at the police department* reported that he had only received one call yesterday, and that concerned water wastage. Both Cooper and Shelley said that t e e special water officers! are checking only on water wast-age and coolers without pumps. I Shelley said that whale, restric- i tions are lifted until further no- { tice, the public still must conserve water. f “ If they don’t,, and the water situation gets had again,” Shelley reported, “ we’ll just have to, tell police to enforce the or-dinance.” l Water company officials, adopte d a wait-and-see attitude, e x -! plaining that recent storms may I have, haem the. cause for the re-1 Latively rosy water picture.
