NAnd do you want to know something? Getty Grable, trim, slim, and those underpinnings as exciting as ever could still be our pin-up candidate. The pass- ing years have'only caressed her with affection. She sang familiar tunes from some of her starring pictures, danced, did a spoofing take-off on a fan dancer, and altogether in this, her first New York night club appearance, won her way back into the esteem of fans who may have forgotten she was once the #top box-office movie attraction. Earlier, a newcomer from England, ^Tonia Bern, who high favor too with xher chants at the St. Regis Maisonette. A friend who has just returned from the Do- minican Republic tells me Argentina?╟╓s ex-dictator, Juan Peron, seems a lone- some man in his exile. Rides around in a scooter?╟÷spends empty hours walking three poodles on a leash (this guy who held the reins of authority in his bloody hands), shuns the gambling tables?╟÷ and beams gratefully when someone [ from the American colony stops to | greet him. I had seen Miss Grable in most her movies but this was the first time that I had seen her in person. Reported to have the most beautiful legs in the world?╟÷well, I wouldn't know about ahat?╟÷but as far as Broadway is concerned ?╟÷that she has ! All too often publicized Holly- wood stars make a Broadway ap- pearance on th<e strength of their following with' but little to back it up. Not Miss Betty Grable! She has an all-time?╟÷hit act, that blends perfectly with the talented Donn Arden revue. Miss Grable ancTTier company do both Holly- wood and Broadway proud. Miss Grable?╟╓s act includes a complete wardrobe changs with practically every song. She starts off with her ?╟úFour Grable Grab- bers?╟Ñ singing, ?╟úI?╟╓m Just Lucky, X Guess,?╟Ñ follows with ?╟úThe Lady?╟╓s In Love With You?╟Ñ and from her hit movie, ?╟úConey Island,?╟Ñ which she also made as ?╟úWabash Ave- nue,?╟Ñ?╟÷Betty sings ?╟úCuddle Up A Little Closer.?╟Ñ In addition to the four handsome boys who work with her, there are also four at- tractive young ladies selecter from the great array of talent in the Latin Quarter line, which blend their talents perfectly to the act?╟╓s requirements. ?╟úCarolina In The Morning?╟Ñ?╟÷a song plugger?╟╓s routine, is a reall show stopper and from ?╟úWabash Avenue?╟Ñ of the roaring 20?╟╓s she| follows through with ?╟úChicago.?╟Ñ Scoring with each number, Betty continues with ?╟úI?╟╓m Jn Love With1 You, Honey,?╟Ñ which introduced to Broadway again?╟÷the Dolly Sisters which, of course, was Miss Grable and another cute girl from the Latin Quarter line....Many more numbers followed on a nostalgic note from Wrorld War I to,, in- clude ?╟úDark Town Strutters Ball,?╟Ñ ?╟úHe?╟╓s The Sheik of Araby?╟Ñ and ?╟úKaty, She Loves Them All.?╟Ñ With the help of her ?╟úGrable I Grabbers?╟Ñ Betty captured thel length and Miami Beach, and with! the roll of the drums, all Broad-| way will be at her feet* This ClippiV'9 From VARIETY NEW YORK, N. The delightful turn presented byl Gordon & Sheila MacRae in the' Painted Desert Room lives up to the advance raves. The husband- wife team have a friendly songfest, happily blended with comedy and impressions. The act is done with- out elborate sets, and would be ideal as a tv spec. MacRae opens with ?╟  ?╟ If I Loved You,?╟Ñ and goes into the' ?╟úOkla- homa!?╟Ñ songs, being jolned by the Mrs. in ?╟úSurrey With Fringe On Top.?╟Ñ He proudly introduces her as ythe former British subject who just became a U.S. citizen last week.?╟Ñ She does remarkably ac- curate impresh'es of Dinah Shore, Lena Horne, Katharine Hepburn, and Zsa Zsa Gabor, and he does a ?√ß devastatingly funny job with Jimmy Cagney, Arthur Godfrey, Perry Como, and Edward R. Mur- row. Among the songs in the reper- toire are ?╟úPalace of Love,?╟Ñ ?╟úOne Alone,?╟Ñ a . medley from 5 ?╟úMower Drum Song,?╟Ñ and ?╟úI Remember It Well.?╟Ñ Act is smoothly staged by ?╟≤Miriam Nelson, and tastbfui?║v btendeyi by the batoning of Van Alexander, with the Carlton Hayes orch (14). ' ' ' ?╟╓*| Jackie Miles precedes the Mac- Raes, and again clicks splidly with his low-pressure comedy patter. Miles kids Vegas, himself, his gambling, and his wife Lee in an ingratiating manner which keeps the laughs coming consistently. (He says he caught a cold here, but because it?╟╓s the desert, he calls it a ?╟úwarm.?╟Ñ) Myrna March, a red-haired look- er, is the featured canary in Donn Arden?╟╓s opening production num- ber, and she delivers with authori- ty. jShow is skedded for four frames.
