Dear Barbara McCants-Hill:
On behalf of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority/Theta Theta Omega Chapter, I would like to thank you for the 40 books that you donated to the Ivy Reading AKAdemy.
The books were truly needed and are being used daily with our students in our one-to-one reading program.
We really appreciate your gift and again, we thank you.
Yours truly,
Jacquelyn Sweetner Caffey, Ivy Reading AKAdemy Coordinator
Education Ivy AKAdemy and ON TRACK Program, Final Report June 7, 2003 Soror Ethel Archibald
The Ivy AKAdemy Pilot Program-Implementing a kindergarten through third grade reading initiative. The goal is to focus on early learning and mastery of basic reading skills by the end of third grade. This is a Spirit of AKA Signature Program.
The program began at Carson Elementary in March 2003 with Soror Veronica Williams as the single volunteer from Theta Theta Omega Chapter. Soror Veronica started volunteering with 1 hour and that escalated to 4 hrs per week after getting to know the children. She tutored, tested, and read to the class of kindergarteners for the remainder of the school year that ended June 4th.
ON TRACK-Prowtes learning experiences and opportunities that will promote communication skills, academic achievement, enhance study habits, and provide life skills for at-risk youth in grades three through six.
This program began in March at Carson Elementary School with Soror Maxine Randolph as the single volunteer from Theta Theta Omega Chapter. Soror Maxine has established a bond with a third grade student that she hopes to carry on her mentoring and tutoring throughout the elementary grades with the same student. Her last day with the student was June 2, 2003.
Soror Ethel Archibald, Chair of the ON TRACK sub-committee, coordinated the materials and training with the school’s facilitator, Judith Ingham. Linda Gibson, principal, will love to have as many sorors as possible to help the much needed, one on one, care to get the students in her charge reading and functioning on grade level. The tutoring kits that were donated by the Clark County School District-Title I Programs are still at the school and the program will continue when school reopens in the fall. Sign-up sheets are available for sorors interested in having a tutee. The training will begin in September.
At this time, I would like to present certificates of appreciation to Sorors Maxine Randolph and Veronica Williams with the thanks from the chapter for the dedication to our programs.
