Historic Preservation Festival Salutes City's 90th Birthday By C h u c k Baker It was approximately 9 0 years ago that modern Las \ 4 g a s began its slow but steady movement into what it has become today. It all began w i t h a land auction, an d that event was celebrated this past M a y 14 in the original Las ^ g a s H i g h School neighborhoo d at 7 t h and Bridger. The H i s t o r i c Preservation Street Festival was the result o f a j o i n t effort between severa I C i t y and C o u n t y agen-cies in c o n j u n c t i o n w i t h the private Pres-ervation A s s o c i a t i o n o f C l a r k C o u n t y . C i t y C o u n c i l members acted out the roles o f auctioneer and land buyers in a spirited bidding that recreated the origi-nal land auction. O t h er activities in-cluded entertainment by professional vocal groups, pony rides, Fire D e p t . pup-pet shows, a display of historic photo-graphs, panning for gold and an awards ceremony.
