The Nathan Adelson Hospice Program, founded in 1980 in Las Vegas, Nevada, is a living memorial to the humanitarian stature and wisdom of Nathan Adelson. Mr. Adelson was an active civic and religious leader. His community service is the basis of the Hospice concept of care. In honor of his life and genuine concern for humane care for the sick and dying, this program serves the people. WHAT IS A HOSPICE? Hospice is primarily a concept of care, not necessarily a place of care. Hospice is a program of supportive services, pain and symptom control, for patients with a life-shortening illness and their families. Its service goal is to help patients live fully and comfortably through its inter-disciplinary team care approach. WHAT IS INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAM CARE? The team is a group of Hospice staff members who coordinate their efforts on behalf of the patient and family. Because a person has physical, psychosocial, social, and spiritual needs, Hospice care is pro-vided by a team in which these various disciplines are represented: medicine, nursing, specially trained volunteers, social work, and clergy. WHAT DOES THE TEAM DO FOR THE PATIENT AND FAMILY? The interdisciplinary team strives to achieve the following goals: ? Prevent and/or control pain and other distressful symptoms. ? Allow the patient to maintain control as long as possible and with maximum dignity. ? Educate caregivers on health care ser-vices that can be delivered in the home. ? Alleviate loneliness, anger, and fear through team intervention with patients and families. Support groups are avail-able during the period of illness and later during their time of bereavement. WHEN AND HOW ARE HOSPICE SERVICES AVAILABLE? Hospice care is available to patients with a life-shortening illness who are no longer under treatment for cure of their disease and whose life expectancy is six months or less. Inquiries are welcome by anyone, but admission to the program requires a physi-cian order. In order to provide the full range of Hospice services, the patient and family must understand that: ? A reliable family member or friend is available to actively share the responsi-bility of caring for the patient with the interdisciplinary team. ? Patient is informed of his/her diagnosis and understands that continuing care will be comfort rather than for cure of the illness. ? The patient, family and physician must understand the philosophy and scope for services provided by the Hospice program. ? The goal of the program is to provide support services to the patient and family, so that the patient can remain in the home, with dignity and in control of his care. ? A n inpatient admission to our facility will be based on the assessment pro-vided by the physician and nurses of the patient's acute medical needs. WHO PAYS FOR HOSPICE CARE? Although the cost of Hospice care is the responsibility of the patient and family, admission to the program will never be determined on the basis of payment source. The Nathan Adelson Hospice is a licensed home health care agency and a licensed acute care hospital so reimburse-ment for its services is available from: ? Governmental insurance plans such as Medicare and Nevada's Medicaid programs. ? Private insurance plans which include home health care benefits and hospital care, or a special Hospice benefit. ? A reasonable payment plan can be arranged through our Business Office during normal working hours.
