Temple Beth Sholom THE BULLETIN June/July 2005 lyar-Sivan 5765 Vol. 5, No. 6 C INSIDE THIS ISSUE President's Message 2 Cantor's Message Executive Director's Message 3 Rabbi Epstein 4 Under the Dome 5 Early Childhood 6 Chavurah Men's Club 7 Quince de Mayo 9 Donations Calendar 13 19 Temple Beth Sholom is a Conservative Congregation affiliated with The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism Dear Friends: It is very difficult to describe what both Liz and I are feeling. There aren't enough words or good wishes in the world to thank you for such an important and mostly undeserved honor. During the past seven years we have all seen Temple Beth Sholom transform itself into a modern, dynamic, vibrant institution and one of the most important and prominent Conservative congregations on the West Coast of the United States. This amazing renewal could not have been possible without you! Both Liz and I vividly remember being met by you at the airport on a warm July evening with Yoshua barely two years old in our arms. That very moment marked the beginning of a beautiful dream; it marked the beginning of a journey that has brought us all to the realization that dreams do come true. It was on the barren desert that Jacob Avinu rested his head on a stone and dreamt about heaven and earth coming together on that very place. He dreamt of angels going up and down a ladder that connected the ordinary with the sacred. Today we too feel as if we were only dreaming and in our dream the angels become every single one of you who have made it possible to transform the ordinary moments of life into the most holy of experiences. Liz, Yoshua, Dani and Ari join me in thanking you for the bottom of our hearts for this incredible honor. Thank you for being with us at the beginning of this journey. The words of the Psalmist come to mind in understanding the magnitude of this day; "this is the day that God has made for us to rejoice in it." May we as a congregation always go from strength to strength. Rabbi Felipe Goodman 2?President's Message Ed Seltzer, President May was truly an exciting and fun filled month for the entire congregation. Services as always were fulfilling and very meaningful. The last 2 weeks brought us 2 very unique experiences to enjoy?the concert by the "Friends of Israeli Defense Forces", which you know if you were able to attend, really "rocked" the sanctuary". I can't think of another occasion that brought so much fun & excitement to our members. The wonderful young soldiers from Israel were so phenomenal you could only "kvell" at their talent and dedication to our homeland. Capping off the month, was the Gala for our Rabbi and Liz Goodman. WHAT A NIGHT, the music had everyone on their feet dancing & singing, especially the Rabbi. The silent auction & live auction were dazzling, what an unbelievable selection of merchandise & trips just waiting to be bid on at great prices. We are so proud of the 350 plus attendees & our members & friends who so graciously supported our ad book and made the Rabbi & Liz feel so loved. How can we ever thank Sandy Mallin, her crew of temple volunteers and our wonderful temple staff for all their hard work which helped make the Rabbi & Liz's dream come true. We thank each & every one of you from the bottom of our hearts, without your support, Temple Beth Sholom would not be the greatest Jewish institution in the Las Vegas Valley. Last & I hope not least, you got a new Temple President. I am grateful to our Temple Board for entrusting me with this position. I feel fully prepared in assuming the post after serving 3 years on the Board and 2 years as 1st Vice President. My 30 year business career I am confident will guide me in making the proper decisions ensuring the fiscal health of the Synagogue. I will always be available & accessible to you, our valued members. Please let me hear from you if I can be of service to you relative to any Temple issues. Cantor's Message/Executive Director's Message?3 Summer Is Upon Us Cantor Daniel Friedman Swirling the last remnants of winter away, the warm winds come swiftly rushing into the Las Vegas valley. Wow, does it get hot here and fast. One day we have rain and cool weather (if you consider 75 degrees cool) the next day whoosh and its 80 degrees with snow still on the mountains! This is no new news to most of us. The heat usually sends us rushing for cover in our air conditioned homes, cars and offices. We seek shelter in everything and anything indoors. All of a sudden the movies look attractive to us, any movie, even re-runs on the television. All of a sudden we decide to join the summer bowling league or learn how to ice-skate. Perhaps we even decide that bingo is not so prohibitive, after-all, one can pretty much spend all afternoon indoors for almost as much as the price of a movie, popcorn, some candy and a soda. Or, perhaps, we start going to morning Minyan just to get out of the house. We attend services at the temple more regularly to break-up the monotony of the home or office. More likely, now is the time of the great family flight from Fahrenheit 110, aka, Las Vegas. The summer is upon us and we are getting out of Dodge! When asked the simple question, "What are you doing this summer?" I can't tell you how many people have responded that they are leaving Las Vegas for a bit or sending the kids to camp or to visit family or friends just to get out of the oppressive heat of the Las Vegas summer months. Well, it is a good thing to be able to get up and go someplace more comfortable. While you are on your journey this summer may I suggest a simple companion to help make the summer even more enjoyable. Whether you stay in Las Vegas comfortably ensconced in your home or car or decide to travel, take a little bit of TBS with you. For me it is always nice to listen to a CD of Jewish music, be it our very own Shabbat Shalom CD or Danny Maseng or Craig Taubman or Debbie Friedman or my personal favorite Yosella Rosenblatt or The Kusevitsky Brothers or Shlomo Carlebach or The IDF Musical Ensemble. These CD's help make the traveling easier and can help remind us of our Jewish roots. Just add something new to your collection of travel music and you, never know, you may actually discover something new that you enjoy. At least you will have some Jewish music to play on Shabbat if you can't make it to the local synagogue at your summer destination of choice. This summer, as always, I wish you safe travels, filled with joyous times, creating memories that will last a lifetime. I look forward to seeing you at temple. This Land Is Your Land; This Temple Is Your Temple Laura Sussman, Executive Director When I was a child, our family would take a lot of road trips during the summer; we'd go camping all over the mid-west. I would really get to know the land through our camping, hiking, sailing, swimming, canoeing and exploring with friends. I truly felt like that land was my land. I often think about the number of families who are members of Temple Beth Sholom and feel like this temple is truly their temple. These families are involved at the temple. They come to minyan and/or weekly Shabbat services, they participate in a committee or a Chavurah, or they volunteer at the temple on a regular basis. As a contrast to this, I also hear from members who share that they don't feel connected with the temple. This comment is disheartening. Belonging to a temple is a significant decision for many people. Creating a true sense of belonging is a goal for our temple and hopefully a goal for our members as well. Based on the experience of many members, the best way to develop a sense of belonging is to get involved! It is a win-win for you and the temple. You have an opportunity to meet other congregants, make connections, learn new skills and better understand how the temple works at the same time, the temple becomes a better place for the entire congregation; richer in programs and activities. This is the time of year when we begin to form our committees. I encourage you to make a personal commitment to enrich you life and the life of the temple by volunteering to get involved. Call me, and we can discuss your individual interests to ensure that you have an enriching experience and develop a true sense of belonging at the temple. 4?Rabbi Epstein ofNrrauo 7i-o the UNITED SYNAGOGUE OF CONSERVATIVE JUDAISM The Association of Conservative Congregations RABBI JEROME M. EPSTEIN Executive Vice-President Chief Executive Officer March 21, 2005 Rabbi Felipe Goodman c/o Temple Beth Sholom 10700 Havenwood Lane Las Vegas, NV 89135 Dear Felipe: It is hard to believe that seven years have passed since you "danced into Las Vegas" and "stole the hearts" of the Jewish community. I still remember our conversation in which I urged you to consider serving as the spiritual leader of Beth Sholom with the promise that you could make an impact on the lives of its congregants. Certainly, the seven years that you have spent tirelessly driving to make Judaism meaningful for the men, women and children in your community have made that impact. The Jewish life of this generation of congregants is richer because of the leadership you have shown and the bonds you have created with your personal warmth and demeanor Having served in this role for so long, 1 know that no rabbi is effective by himself. The fact that Liz has been your "willing partner" has made it possible for you to develop such positive relationships with your congregants. The fact that your congregants are so receptive to your teaching and leadership and have worked together with you to make Beth Sholom a dynamic and exciting community is a tribute to their dedication. As you begin the next stage in your rabbinate, 1 pray that you and your congregation will walk together in strength and in harmony. We all gathered together to celebrate our wonderful mothers at a special Shabbat luncheon. Thank you to all of those who attended this heartfelt memorable event and huge thank you to Tonya Williams for her generous donation of flowers and time. Look for our upcoming annual Shabbat family fundraiser dinner followed by a children's service led by Cantor and Rabbi on Friday, June 3rd. Falafel, singing, dancing wishes at the "wall" were just a few of the many traditions introduced through interactive play and develop-mentally appropriate learning during our celebration of Israeli Independence Day. The children were a part of a classroom rotation which exposed them to Israeli art, culture, customs and traditions. Now for tooting our own "shofar"! Mrs. LuAnn Alder, the teacher of the Panda bear classroom was bestowed the honor of "Teacher of the Year" at the Summerlin Children's Forum. LuAnn is truly an outstanding teacher and we are so proud of her. "Kippah's" off also to Alex Lanzkowsky, a student in the first grade class of the Solomon Schechter Day School for outstanding achievement and Mrs. Michelle Barney for being recognized as a parent/community member. Congratulations to the children of Kittah Alef who are in the Solomon Schechter 1st grade class. They received first place in the Israeli Independence Day Art project. Mrs. Orly Hayon, their Judaica teacher, accepted the award presented from Robin Leach at the Venetian Hotel on Sunday, May 15th. Way to Go! As we come close to the end of the school year with graduations and end of the year parties, I would like to thank all the parents, children, teachers and staff for a wonderful and unforgettable initial term for me as Temple Beth Sholom's Early Childhood Director. The love and caring which exudes from our preschool and Schechter families is what makes our schools a special place to be in Las Vegas. I look forward to seeing your children at camp K'ton this summer. For more information call the office at 804-1333 extension 112. It is one of the many ways to enhance your experience as a Temple member. We encourage you to join a Chavurah. What is a Chavurah? Chavurah (plural is "Chavurot") comes from the Hebrew word, chaver, meaning friend, or fellowship. Each Chavurah is a small group of Temple members who come together to learn, to socialize and to enjoy Jewish living with their families that share common interests. They worship together, celebrate Jewish holi days together, eat and socialize together. For many, the chavurah is an extended family. What Does A Chavurah Do? The Chavurah celebrates Jewish life. Through programs of study, observances of holidays and festivals, socializing, sharing of interests and simchas. Members personalize and vitalize their Jewish experience. A Chavurah provides a unique opportunity for self-growth, involvement, friendship, and for a feeling of true belonging. The programs are self-directed. Responsibility for activities rests with the members of the Chavurah. When And Where Does A Chavurah Meet? A Chavurah usually meets once a month. Each group decides on the most convenient dates and times for How Do I Join A Chavurah? Complete a Chavurah Application. You will be contacted soon afterwards. New Chavurot are formed on the basis of age, children, spheres of interest, etc. You will be placed in a Chavurah as soon as enough applications are received to form a new group, or if there is an opening in an existing Chavurah which fits your needs. Participation is limited to members of Temple Beth Sholom. Please mail completed application to: TBS Chavurah Chairperson, 10700 Havenwood Lane, Las Vegas NV 89135. The Men's Club dodge ball team earned a league trophy and on the May fishing trip our President's search for Striped Bass was successful. The entire congregation was using Yom Hashoa candles provided by the Men's Club. The final presentation of Jewish community organizations took place on May18th. Michael Novick, President and Meyer Bodoff, Executive Director of the Jewish Federation discussed the Federation's activities and relationships. The Men's Club finishes the year with another community organization presentation. The June 15th meeting will host Rene Colen with a presentation on SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives). We would like to thank all those members of the congregation who responded to the Yom Hashoa donation appeal. It is not too late to send in (in care of the TBS office) a donation to the Men's Club to support the Yom Hashoa program and community organizations.
