Fifth and Chestnut Streets Philadelphia, PA 19106 ? 215/625-0411 ? FAX: 215/625-0643 December 21, 198 8 Edythe Katz Jewish Federation of Las Vegas 1030 East Twain Street Las Vegas, NV 89102 Dear Edythe: We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you as a new member of the Board of Directors of the Anne Frank Institute of Philadelphia. The Institute was founded in 1975 to promote understanding of the Holocaust and its implications for contemporary society. From its inception, the Institute has been ecumenical in scope, conceiving of the Holocaust as a tragedy for the entire human race, and of vital concern for every human being. In this spirit, its membership, staffing and governing board are comprised of both Christians and Jews, making the Institute the only interfaith organization devoted exclusively to the Holocaust. For the past fourteen years, the Institute has been a pioneer in combining rigorous academic standards with an interdisciplinary, humanizing approach to Holocaust studies. As such, it is widely recognized as a local, national and international resource for educators, clergy and community leaders. The Institute sponsors a variety of annual and bi-annual programs aimed at the diverse constituencies it serves, ranging from young children and adolescents to scholars and clergy, and from public officials to community organizations. Director of Education. RICHARD LIBOWITZ International. Director. MARCIA SACHS LITTELL Edythe Katz Page 2 December 21, 1988 Each year in November, a leading expert in the field of Holocaust studies is invited to present a public Kristallnacht lecture, commemorating the "Night of Broken Glass,"which marked the beginning of legalized terror against Jews in Nazi Germany. Every December, the Institute hosts the Anne Frank Chanukah Celebration of Religious Freedom, an inter-faith, inter-racial holiday observance for children. In preparation for Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah) in April, the Institute offers an annual training workshop for educators, clergy and community leaders, to assist them in creating their own programs. In June, on Anne Frank's birthday, the Institute presents the Eternal Flame Award to an adult who exemplifies the commitment tofreedom and interfaith understanding at the heart of its mission, and the Anne Frank Youth Award to an exemplary pupil. In addition to its local programming, the Institute co-sponsors with the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council, the Annual Scholars' Conference on The Church Struggle and The Holocaust, an international event for professors, researchers and graduate students. The Institute also co-sponsored with Pergamon Press, the international conference "Remembering for the Future." Dr. Littell writes a weekly column, "Lest We forget," which is distributed to newspapers in seventeen states. Finally, the Institute has played a key role in organizing, teaching and recruiting participants for the annual Teachers 1 Institute at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. The Institute presently is establishing America's first Anne Frank Museum in Philadelphia among the other shrines of liberty. This will be an interfaith, inter-racial center which will contain in its permanent exhibit the photos of "Anne Frank in the World" as well as a version of the Secret Attic in which Anne's family and four friends hid for two years. This center will provide a unique resource for understanding the Holocaust and addressing the moral and ethical issues we face today. We are delighted to have you on board at this exciting time in the history of our organization and hope that it will be a meaningful and rewarding experience to be a part of building the nation's first Anne Frank Children's Museum. We are a free-standing organization, not affiliated with any specific agency. As such, it is necessary for us to raise all of our operating expenses from the community through donations, memberships, and grants. This puts a large responsibility on the members of the board to either personally make an outright donation and/or seek additional donations to assist with the operational costs and programmatic meeds of the Institute. ANNE FRANK INSTITUTE OF PHILADELPHIA Edythe Katz Page 3 December 21, 1988 Generally, each Board Member makes a minimum donation of $1,000 annually, more if it is at all possible. Our fiscal year runs from June 1 through May 31st, and we encourage members to apprise us of how they would like to handle this matter, whether it be monthly, annually, or bi-annually. Again, please accept a hearty welcome to the Board and hope you know how pleased we are to have you as a member. Sincerely, Elaine Lieberman ANNE FRANK INSTITUTE OF PHILADELPHIA
