Washington, D.C. 20585 Dear Mr. Secretary: As you are aware, the Nevada Test Site has recently been the scene of major protest activity against America's nuclear testing program. In discussions with Nye County law enforcement officials, this has placed an extremely heavy burden on the County's capability to cope. With this in mind, I am requesting that the Department of Energy (DOE) assist Nye County in its time of need. For your information, I have enclosed a copy of a letter I recently received from the Nye County District Attorney, Philip Dunleavy. At my request, I asked Mr. Dunleavy to outline for me the extent of Nye County's problem. His report is distressing. I am particularly concerned that protest activity is on a dramatic rise, from 262 complaints issued in 1985, to 530 in just the first two months of 1987 alone. Clearly, with more protests imminent, and facilities inadequate, the County is in need of assistance. DOE has always been a cooperative partner with Nye County, and I recognize budgetary constraints. Nevertheless, your help in this matter is crucial tor eNqyuee sCto. unty, and I urge your attention to this CH: dp Enclosure
