Three of the students are sponsored by the Southwest Los Angeles Rotary club while the fourth is sponsored by the Long Beach club. With Paul McDermott as moderator, speaking today are: DANIEL CHANG, 23-year-old native of Shanghai, China, who is a junior student at Pepperdine College, will tell why he thinks the only way to free China is to re-establish the country on the basis of democracy and freedom. IRAJ FAKHRIEH, 26, of Teheran, Iran, who is a cousin of former Prem-ier Mohammed Mossadegh, will speak on his native land. He is a junior stu-dent also at Pepperdine. JAMES ATSUHI YOSHIDA, 22-year old Pepperdine junior and a native of Mie-ken, Japan, who will discuss his rea-sons for advocating that New Japan, should be established on the principle of freedom, justice, democracy and Christianity. CORNEILLE A. VAN HEES, 20, who at-tends Long Beach State College from his native Netherlands. Corneille, an orphan with no brothers or sisters, is the nephew of a member of the Rotary club of Hengelo, The Netherlands. He will give us his impressions of the United States. While in Las Vegas, he is the house guest of the O.J. Scherer family. NEXT WEEK R. W. Renshaw, Engineer and general manager of the Las Vegas Valley Water District, will discuss the water situa-tion in this locality. LAST WEEK Sound reasoning, coupled with an excellent command of the English language, brought members of the Las Vegas club much closer to the problems of Malaya as Selvadurai Thiruchelvam spoke last Thursday. A Cornell Univer-sity student studying on a Rotary Foun-dation Fellowship, Thiruchelvam's mes-sage was well received. "VC "A ">C" 7r ->C " C ">C CHAMPION DRIVER Horst Schmidt, our last German Ex-change student, is in Washington, D.C., competing for the national driving championship after winning the regional and State titles recently. Ernie Cragin and Rotaryann Celia, with whom Horst lives when he is not attending Loyola University, claim he is a "cinch" to win the title and the $3100 college scholar-ship to be awarded the victor. -x- * -k- -x- -x- -i:- -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- -x- GENEROUS Thanks of the club go to Leo Brown-field, member of the Brownfield, Texas, Rotary club, who donated last week's "pot" winnings of $23.90 to our club for its youth activity program. Major Fenley will also spend the next two weeks at Fort Ord on active duty and in keep-ing Scoop and Walt busy ED and LOUISE FOUNTAIN are on a vacation jaunt into Yellowstone Na-tional Park JACK and LOTTIE WOLLENZIEN are among the vacationers spending time in Yosemite National Park LORIN and MYRTLE RONNOW are va-cationing at La Jolla, California... JOHN BEVILLE and family are in Boulder, Colorado, where he is at-tending some lectures on American literature to be followed by several days of hunting and fishing in the Rockies. WHO'S WHO Born in Chatanooga, Tennessee. Raised on a farm in the East Tennes-see Mountains. Attended a one room, log cabin school house located in the Tennessee hills two miles from the family homestead. The school benches and desks consisted of rough hewn logs sawed in half. The plumb-ing was around back. Last Thursday we welcomed the visit of 19 Rotarians from other clubs, and 16 guests of club members. high school age the family moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where he com-pleted his high school education. Another move took the family to Bloom-ington, Illinois, near Champaign, lo-cation of the University of Illinois, which university he attended, and graduated from, with a degree in edu-cation. Before eventually going into the teaching profession, he worked in various jobs throughout the U.S. doing public accounting work. He entered the George Peabody College of Teachers, and while working toxirard his Master's degree, taught part time at that in-stitution. Moved to Dallas, Texas. Besides teaching, he served as Public School supervisor in that city. In 1929, he followed the advice of Horace -over- Greely and arrived in Las Vegas at six o'clock in the morning wearing a ten gallon hat and sporting Texas license plates. At 8:00 o'clock he had a job so they let him stay, Texas plates to the contrary. For a time he taught bookkeep-ing at the local high school, later talcing over the full time assignment. In 1929, opened his own Public Accounting Office. Has served his community in several capacities, filling the un-ejqpired term of County Recorder and Auditor in 193U and serving several years on the Board of Education. In 19^1+ was the first C.P.A. examinee in the State of Nevada. His Rotary Ann is named Isobel. Has three children, Jane, Bill and Cath-erine. Is a grandfather three times over. His name: AL "Tex" BLA.CKMA.N Jear Ray: This completes my stint until I get back from a few days at Boulder, Colorado. While there I am attending some lectures on American lit. by some well known writers. (This is about as remote as a person can get from the business I am in). Helen says this is not her idea of fun, listening to a bunch of writers talking about themselves, so later on 1 will make things up to her by taking her hunting and fishing. JOHNNIE" -/
