But as we c o n t i n u e to grow as a congregation, the unfortunate reality is that we will lose some of our members and their family. One of the greatest mitzvot that we can p e r f o rm is called kevod hamet, honoring the dead. Honoring the dead is a hesed shel emet, an eternal act of kindness, because it is one that can never be repaid. Most Jewish communities have a hevrah kadishah, a Jewish burial society (literally, a holy society), whose sole purpose is to bring honor to the dead by t a k i n g proper care of the body until burial. Generally, the hevrah kadishah is a group of anonymous, volunteer Jewish laypeople who have been t r a i n e d in the Jewish laws of burial. Women attend to the bodies of women, and men a t t e n d to the bodies of men. The hevrah kadishah is responsible for tahara, which l i t e r a l l y means " p u r i f i c a t i o n . " Tahara usually c o n s i s t s of a ceremonial washing of the body, dressing the deceased in tachrichim (shrouds), and placing the body in the c o f f i n . The r e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s of the hevrah kadishah can also include providing shomrim, guarding of the body until the funeral, usually by r e c i t i n g psalms. Some hevrah kadishah also extend themselves to the g r i e v i n g family, by making sure shiva arrangements are taken care of such as providing f o o d and a minyan for prayer services. Recently, a Midbar Kodesh member requested a tahara for a family member, and we were unable to provide this final mitzvah for her. We did not have a hevrah kadishah in place to take of women who had passed away. As a result, we have a pressing need in the community. In Las Vegas, the Orthodox community has a small group of people who attend to Jewish burial needs. Our Conservative f r i e n d s , the members of Temple Beth Sholom, have now begun a hevrah kadishah of their own. Rabbi Goodman and I would like our congregations to work together in f o r m i n g a u n i f i ed Conservative hevrah kadishah in Las Vegas. While this beautiful mitzvah is not for everyone, those who have p a r t i c i p a t e d in a hevrah kadishah have said that it is one of the most awe-inspiring experiences of their lives. I strongly believe it is time for Midbar Kodesh to help f o rm a vibrant hevrah kadishah for our community. If you are i n t e r e s t e d or possibly i n t e r e s t e d in any aspect of the hevrah kadishah, please speak with me privately. Once we have formed a v i a b l e group, we will have a study and t r a i n i n g session for all p a r t i c i p a n t s . Creating a hevrah kadishah is the u l t i m a t e mitzvah of love--and we need your help. ~ Rabbi Jeremy Wiederhorn 0 ' ? " y * * R j s h o n le- A - r . q ? e r t # ^ JUDEA' ??/ k'K/' {Jetlfniting.
