Lovely June Ally son, with a cute request, dropped in to say hello?╟÷wanted to watch the Copa- Continued on Page 3 SANDS WAS NERVE CENTER of the A-TESTS U.S. Civil Defense Officials, Governors, Mayors, y Press, Newsreels?╟÷All Choose Same Headquarters ?╟≤ DURING the important A-blast tests held in the Las Vegas area recently, the Sands became the nerve center of the complex Federal Civil Defense activities, handling some 385 officials and members of the press for almost 17 days. Through the Sands switchboards, there were approximately 10,000 phone calls related to the tests mainly due to the fact that Governor 5-MILLIOIMTH VISITOR TO SANDS IN 2-YEARS WINS FABULOUS VACATION m WHEN it was noted that the 5-millionfh visiter to the Sands would doubtless arrive during its 2nd Anniversary celebration, a close check on arrivals was made and, at the crucial moment, such stars, as Danny Thomas, Debbie Reynolds, Eddie Fisher, Louella Parsons and Jimmy McHugh were ready to host the winners. The lucky guests were Mr. and Mrs. Ab- ner Katz of Philadelphia. Their prize?╟÷ A fabulous week at the Sands with all expenses paid and Danny Thomas their host. VAL PETERSON, head of the FCDA, and his entire working staff were housed at the Sands for nearly a month. Two busy helicopters fascinated other Sands guests by landing right on the lawn outside of the Churchill Downs building which housed the stafT, Nearly 1,000 lunches were sent up by the Sands to the Test Site, 100 miles away for cold and weary observers. Nine Governors, 4 Mayors, 2 Whlte^ House Officers, and 16 top Government Officials kept the switchboard and service people at the Sands busy with their official business.
