ESTABLISHED 1888 BArclay 7-5371 !g PRESS CLIPPING BUREAU 165 Church Street - New York LOS ANGELES, CALIF. TIMES Circ. D. 399,393 - S. 770,054 r DEC H M Hecht Signs CBS Contract for Weekly Series; Skelton Agent Looking for TV Subs I 1^1;. BY WALTER AMES Bin Hscht, auth6r and dramatist and winner of the Academy Award for his screen plays, has been signed by CBS television Network to create anew weekly program of original presentations. He will act as supervising editor of the entire series and write at least two plays a month for the half-hour shows. top playwrights and writers will be used to furnish material for the other presentations in the series and acting talent will be recruited from the leaders of the entertainment "wbrld. Robert Stevens, well known for his Suspense, TV series, has been assigned as director and coproducer of the programs. Red Skelton's illness is causing plenty of concern among his business associates and it appears that the comic doesn't have as many TV shows in advance as has been advertised. Bd Roos, his business manager, called the Andrews Sisters at the Las Vegas Sahara Tuesday night to see if they were available for six of . Red's shows. The girls had to bow out because of the lack of rehearsal time combined with previous engagements. Speaking of Las Vegas, a host of Danny Tnomas friends from the television and movie wbrld turned out for the christening of Jake Freedman and Jack Entratter's magnificent new .Sands.Hotel.; Spot^ Copa Room were Jane Powr ell, Geary Steffen. Spike Jones and his wife, Helen Grayco; Terry Moore, Denise Darcel, Danny Thomas Frankie Laine and Nan Grey; Corinne Calvet and John Bromfield, Grant Withers, the Ritaf Brothers, Jimmy Durante and countless others. , A feature of the Opening ceremonies was. the planting of a time capsule into which Durante placed his famous hat, Danny Thomas put a gold-plated automobile jack and Laine deposited a gold copy of "Jezebel." Also dropped into the nine- foot-long aluminum tube were Arthur Godfrey's ukulele, Tallulah Bankhead's controversial book and one of Bing Crosby's famed pipes. Harry Ritz proved a great actor for the newsreel and still photographers. He didn't lose any money llftH^ deal, however, because while posing with a one-armed/bandit Harry pulled the lever and hit the jackpot. The Sands, incidentally, should be popular among horse, players. The hotel buildings are named after five famed race tracks, Arlington Park, Belmont Park, Santa Anita, Hialeah Park and Rockingham Park. Just for a chuckle here's a press release from NBC: "An appropriate Yuletide tale, 'The Christmas Cards/ will be seen on Robert Montgomery Presents Dec. 22." Here's the joker.. The KNBH (4) release date is Monday, Jan. 5, well into next" year as time flies. Oh, yes, it's on a kinescope.
