Call about our Youth Dances SUPERSTITIONS by Sidney Feilte The Jewish people, just like other folks, do indulge in superstitious beliefs, as was pointed out in a leading Jewish periodical recently. The origin of some of these s u p e r s t i t i o n s - - s o m e of which have grown to be customs - -antedates the Bible. As they are rooted in idolatry, there are Biblical interdictions respecting them. The Jew, like the Gentile, is a believer in luck. "Mazel Tov" is a familiar and oft-repeated expression, but it's origin is not so well known. It finds its roots in Astrology which is the belief that human destiny is influenced by the stars, and the changes in their positions. The twelve constelations in the Zodiac were called "Mazzalos" f r om which evolved " M a z e l " . There is a belief among the Jewish people that it is unlucky to count a group of people. This belief apparently is connected with a Biblical passage and a ..estilence which befell the Jews on account of David having numbered the people. Thus was born the belief that counting individuals was sure to be followed by some misfortune. So, to o v e r c o m e the evil effect in many communities, it is the custom today, to count the number of men in a M nyan by a negative count, "Nisht eins, nisht tzvay, e t c . " " Kayn eine horrah" is a fa orite Jewish exclamatioi a cabalistic expression intended to avert misfortune - - l i t e r a l l y , it is "without an evil e y e . " Belief in the magic of the evil eye, is not confined to the Jewish people, the b elief being prevalent among many nations, even in this enlightened day. The d i f f e r e n c e , however, as far as the Jew is concerned, is the evil eye is never at-tributed to the Deity. A superstitious custom, taken to be law by many Jews, is the practice that forbids naming a new-born baby after a living relative. There does not seem to be any rule prohibiting the practice. The reason for it seems to be the fear that by naming the child after a living person, the living person might thereby be deprived of his full life. There are many others, but time and space preclude further examination. Suffice is to say that superstitions still persist. sfcsjcsfcsjesfcsfcafesfr^rifesje^esjesjofe^c BOARD OF DIRECTORS Harry W Uerstein, President Lloyd Katz, First Vice it-resident Norman Shliskey, Second Vice President Arthur Lurie, Treasurer Bess Schwartz, Secretary Dave B Liss Jack ILntratter Max Goot Jerry Mack Hank Greens pun Stan Irwin Art Marshall Frank Cobert Harry Mack Irving Fields David Goldwater Morton Saiger George Katz Annette Goldfarb Sophie Katzman TEMPLE BETH SHOLOM BULLETIN Published by TEMPLE BETH SHOLOM The Jewish Community Center of Las Vegas, Nevada I 1600 E.
