Right now we have several people waiting for new groups to be formed. We've had requests for a "Young Adults" group, Families with p r e - t e e n and teenaged children; and a "Retired" group. " 3 5 + Singles" have also voiced a need and another Young Families group is about to emerge. Fran Marco has set Tuesday evening, April 17, at 7 : 3 0 pm as the time and date for a Chavurah Fair. All people i n t e r e s t e d in j o i n i n g a group can come and talk to r e p r e s e n t a t i v e s of existing groups and speak to others who would like to f o rm a new Chavurah. The existing groups are made up of couples, f a m i l i e s and singles and we encourage the same mixed components in each new chavurah! This creates a t r u e family atmosphere and o f f e r s a d i v e r s i t y of experiences to each group. Since the b e g i n n i n g of the year 2000 more than 80 new family units have j o i n e d Midbar Kodesh Temple. Many have come to the Las V e g a s / H e n d e r s o n areas, leaving f a m i l y and f r i e n d s behind in other states. The quickest way to make new f r i e n d s in a new community is to j o i n a synagogue, become active by sitting on committees and make new f r i e n d s by j o i n i n g a Chavurah, a group of synagogue people with like interests. The 1st Young Family group now has 8 couples, most of them with small c h i l d r e n . They have had f u n c t i o n s with and without the children. Most of the B'nai Mitzvah class of 2013 c u r r e n t l y belongs to this Chavurah! An empty nesters group formed more than 2 years ago and they have 20 people that meet monthly for social events. They go to dinner, to theater and to each other's homes for an evening. Last April they j o i n e d together with t h e i r own f a m i l i e s and had a pot luck Passover dinner for more than 60 people! Another Chavurah seats 11 people for kosher d i n i n g . . . T h e hosting couple selects the menu and gives out cooking assignments and recipes. They j o in together at the host home, b r i n g i n g their kosher hot packs with them. Twice they have tried eating out, but mostly they enjoy their own e f f o r t s which has included Moroccan fare, 6 courses of Chinese, two Sukkot meals and a special Tu B'Shevat menu. Then t h e r e ' s the group who o r i g i n a l l y met at services on Friday evening. They have their own minyan wherever they go, g e t t i n g together for meals and holidays and other social events. I n another group most of it's participants are members of Midbar Kodesh, but it did not start out that way 13 years ago. That group has 9 f a m i l i e s and is synagogue based. They celebrate holidays, have enjoyed all life cycle events over the years, including many, many B'nai Mitzvah, and have hosted Shabbat dinners and home services for each other. They have lead services at d i f f e r e n t continued on page 11 P U B L I S H E D MONTHLY R a b b i J e r e m y W i e d e r h o r n C a n t o r R o b e r t D. There is a story that says that Rabbi Akiva and his f r i e n d s ^ J once ran an a l l - n i g h t e r , a Seder which lasted until dawn. Our r e l i g i o u s school will h o l d Its annual "mock" Seder and a l t h o u g h , it will not last "ail night," it will be a "legit" Seder. Michelle is the daughter of Debbie and Jonathan Stone, and the Granddaughter of Milton & Natalie Kranitz of Rosewell, New Mexico and Renee Stone of San Diego. Michelle has worked very hard since her brother Steve' s Bar Mitzvah a year and a half ago, and now it is her turn to shine. She want's to be an actress, and this will be her first time alone on stage! She likes to go to USY meetings and events with her friends and wants to help others in her class to study for their B'nei Mitzvah. Born in New Jersey on April 11, 1988, Michelle misses the snow and the friends she left back east. She likes to e-mail her friend SarahAnn and invited her to come to Las Vegas to share t h i s special occasion. Michelle also likes to l i s t en to music with her friends and play on the ?J* computer with her brother. In school, Michelle is a good student and is a member of the Drama Club. She is looking forward to sharing this o c c a s i o n and all that she has learned with her friends, relatives, and Midbar family. E> K i Nx, Mazel Tov to Michelle and her family! "Thank You" t o The Belkoff Family of ACE CAMERA for d o n a t i n g some of t h e photos on t h i s pagel Q tx . - j ( '6 u M>j ' } y u V APRIL 2001 D "Top 10 Ways To Improve Your Seder" continued from page 3 something more substantial to hold your guests over u n t i l the meal begins. Some suggestions f o r this are: potatoes, salad, and artichokes. 5) A s s i g n P a r t s in A d v a n c e In order to encourage p a r t i c i p a t i o n in your seder, you may want t o consider giving your guests a l i t t l e homework! Ask them to bring something creative t o discuss, sing, or read at the table. You may suggest that your guests come in costume?dressed as their f a v o r i t e plague! All you have to do is ask, and you may be pleasantly surprised w i t h the response. 6) Know y o u r a u d i e n c e This may seem obvious, but the success of your seder w i l l largely depend on your careful a t t e n t i o n t o the needs of the seder guests. If you expect many young children at the seder, you ought t o t a i l o r the seder accordingly. If you have people who have never been t o a seder before, be prepared for lots of basic questions and explanations. Do not underestimate your guests; if you take t h e seder seriously, they w i l l likely respond positively. 7 ) Fun A c t i v i t i e s Everyone wants t o have a good time at the seder. Each year, we t r y something a l i t t l e d i f f e r e n t to add some spice to the evening. Consider creating a Passover game such Pesach Family Feud, Jewpardy, or Who Wants t o be an Egyptian M i l l i o n a i r e ? ! Go around t h e table and ask people fun questions w i t h serious or s i l ly answers. 8) Q u e s t i o n s for D i s c u s s i o n An adult seder ought t o raise questions that are pertinent t o the themes found in the haggadah. For example, when we read "ha lachma anya?this is the bread of a f f l i c t i o n " , why do we say t h a t "now we are slaves?" To what aspects of our current lives are we enslaved? How can we become free? What does i t mean/what are the implications of being enslaved in today's society? We read in the haggadah, "in each generation, one is required to see t o him/herself as if s/he was personally redeemed f r om Egypt." Why should t h i s be the case? How do we go about doing t h a t ? If we really had such an experience, how would that affect our relationship w i t h God? As you read t h r o u g h the Haggadah, push yourself to ask these type of questions, and open them up f o r discussion. 9) Share F a m i l y T r a d i t i o n s Part of the beauty of Passover, is the number of fascinating t r a d i t i o n s f r om around the world. Encourage your guests t o share the t r a d i t i o n s they remember about Passover as a child. Some families begin their own new t r a d i t i o n s as w e l l . Riki's f a m i l y likes t o go around the table and ask everyone to participate in f i l l i n g the cup of Elijah. As each person pours f r om his/her cup i n to Elijah's, s/he o f f e r s a wish/prayer for the upcoming year. 1 0 ) P r e p a r a t i o n M M The more thought and preparation given to the seder, t he more successful the seder w i l l be. Don't expect t o just "wing i t , " and hope that everything w i l l fall i n t o place. A t h o u g h t f u l , creative, and enjoyable seder takes time to prepare. We often get so caught up preparing f o r the meal, that it is easy to forget about the content of the seder. Spend the time, and you won't regret i t ! Don't forget t o have fun.
