Biggest Year in Cups?╟╓ History as 250 Clubs compete in Colorful Event The battle for the 1970 Desert Inn International Gold Cup is going at a rapid pace with 13 teams having clinched a berth for the big June Finals. Starting in October, almost weekly, some 21 Districts representing 17 states, two nations and the District of Columbia compete in the qualifying rounds that conclude in May. Gold Cup functions are festive occasions at the Desert Inn as the members are treated to a cocktail/buffet the night before the first day's play. On the last night of their stay, members and their wives are guests of the hotel to see the world's greatest stage spectacle, ''Pzazz '70." Every team member leaves the Dl with many fond memories and looks forward to returning next year. In June, the 21 winners return to the Desert Inn to challenge each other and determine the champion. And to the victors goes the coveted Gold Cup which is valued at $50,000. Members of the winning team in the Finals are presented with a miniature replica made of pure gold.
